  • Penalties behind the line of scrimmage were now assessed from the spot of the foul, intentional grounding became a pure spot foul, and 12 man huddles were banned
  • Eight WAC schools broke away to form the Mountain West
  • Freshman Michael Vick revolutionized the quarterback position, and got Virginia Tech to the national title game
  • Marshall followed Tulane in being an undefeated non-BCS conference champ left out
  • Florida State became the first wire to wire national champion

Eh, not 1998.  Probably the least-deserved national champion since 1984.  
Syracuse game, Arkansas game, facing a backup QB in NC game.

But probably the most fun season.  Ricky going wild, two undefeated teams going down on the final Saturday.  This one wasn't close to me.  Least deserving national champion, maybe.  But one of the best seasons.  That actually may wind up being my overall #1
