I think the major difference is northern schools still play baseball, but very few southern schools even play hockey. Michigan and Ohio State have had some very good teams, including a Michigan team that was one win away from the national championship a couple years ago.
I don't think most northern school fans expect a national title. I just want MSU to make the tournament. Maybe things go right and they reach a super regional. That's fine.
Also, kids play baseball everywhere. I remember going to Eastern Michigan baseball games with my grandfather when I was young, and they had a really good program. It's not a super expensive sport, and people everywhere like it, so you can get some attendance. Hockey is an insanely expensive sport. When Michigan State was bottomed out, it lost money. So there is no reason for southern schools to sponsor it, because I can't imagine grandfathers taking their grandsons to go watch a random college hockey game in Mississippi. So you will just hemorrhage money. I think in general SEC schools sponsor far fewer sports
