The only 3 non-SEC teams in the top 10 are Stanford, Wake Forest, and Oklahoma State.
.
I'm not sure why the whole country plays baseball.  It might as well be the southern version of ice hockey.

I love college baseball.  Each game is more enjoyable to me, because there is less pressure on any individual game, compared to football.  Didn't win this game?  That's okay there are two more in the series.  Didn't win the series?  That's okay, there are 15 or 16 or 17 more in the season.

Sitting in the stands at Disch-Falk, or tailgating outside the gates, during the springtime-- that's my happy place.

Same reason SEC schools still hold classes.  There are always idiots who will pay money for a subpar product

This isnt surprising to me at all

I wonder how it would look if it was football instead of baseball

I think the major difference is northern schools still play baseball, but very few southern schools even play hockey. Michigan and Ohio State have had some very good teams, including a Michigan team that was one win away from the national championship a couple years ago.

I don't think most northern school fans expect a national title.  I just want MSU to make the tournament. Maybe things go right and they reach a super regional. That's fine.

Also, kids play baseball everywhere. I remember going to Eastern Michigan baseball games with my grandfather when I was young, and they had a really good program. It's not a super expensive sport, and people everywhere like it, so you can get some attendance. Hockey is an insanely expensive sport. When Michigan State was bottomed out, it lost money. So there is no reason for southern schools to sponsor it, because I can't imagine grandfathers taking their grandsons to go watch a random college hockey game in Mississippi. So you will just hemorrhage money. I think in general SEC schools sponsor far fewer sports

The best they could hope for is some novelty interest starting out.
But hey, if you somehow boosted some tailgating for hockey, you'd get that tiny, die-hard fanbase the sport seems to rely on overall.

I think the same is true of golf. Many northern programs field a team, but it's dominated by southern/western schools where year-round play is possible. Just far easier to develop talent (both at the lower levels and once the kids get to college) if you can play year-round.

If you look at the modern stroke play era (1965-present), I see one year OSU won the whole thing, one year BYU did, and one year Minnesota pulled it off. Every single other year is a southern/western team.
