Back when Anthony Bourdain was alive (too soon, bro, too soon...) I think his travel shows essentially demonstrated that.

It didn't matter where he went. And he went to some rough places. Post-earthquake Haiti... Cuba... Iran... Cambodia... Detroit.

But he would talk to people. Really sit down and talk. And what you saw was that people on the ground, no matter where you are, basically all want the same thing. Economic security. To make a better life for their kids. Connection to their community.

It doesn't matter what color their skin is. It doesn't matter what religion they are. It doesn't matter what government they're under. People are just... People.

Ever been to Louisiana?  (with apologies to MDT :))

In looking at my map, I could piss into Mexico from Texas.
Yes. We’re very far south. Which is why it’s funny to me that TN is so far North, but still considered southern. Completely true.

In Ohio 70 is the line of demarcation. Even in Columbus its like two different cities depending on which side of that freeway you are on.

Tennessee is just as far north as Texas.

A small part of one of my favorite college stories about some of my best friends was their excitement about reaching Texas on their way from Madison to South Padre. They didn't realize they were still only half way there.

Texas is big. (I'll be here all week for brilliant thoughts like this one.)

Yeah, when I moved from CA to GA back in 2005, the first day was 12 hours in the car that got me from Los Angeles, CA to El Paso, TX.

The second day was 12 hours in the car that got me from El Paso, TX, to...

...Houston, TX.

Somewhere South of Kingsville on our final stretch toward Padre Spring Break of '92, we encountered some Wisconsin dudes in a car.  There were 5 of us in a motorhome putting along at 55 mph--after the right side rear duals came off the rig and we had to get towed and reattached--after we walked the ditches looking for them.

Anyway, we were passing a whiskey bottle back and forth with them whilst headed South.

Good times.

Yeah on one of my Spring Break trips to South Padre, I met a group of (very accommodating) girls from Southern Illinois U.  They had a similar story about cheering when they reached the Texas border, and then later realizing they were only halfway to their destination.

Do people not look at maps before they get on the road?

The mind plays tricks on folks. I remember crossing the Tennessee-Georgia border on the way of Orlando in college and thinking “well, only one more border to cross?” And that’s true in fact and not in spirit.

Well, the three people involved in my story, two of them were not sober when they left (only one of them was likely to have good judgment when sober), and the sober one, who was driving, was the wrong friend to rely on for things like common sense. By the time the other two were sober, they were a long way towards their goal, and apparently the momentum was enough to just keep going. The whole thing was a debacle.

I agree. When we used to drive back/forth, getting to Florida or to Illinois felt like something, but it wasn't anything.

Both are pretty long states.
