Don’t tell the southerners that.
Don't need to. I lived in that state, North of I-80.

It's the South, beginning at that line.

I can tell you this FWIW....St. Louis is not the south.

South of St. Louis is the south.

St. Louis is a pocket.

Kinda like the Vatican.

OK, not quite like that.

For some Louisianans, everything above Alexandria is the North.

Arkansas is a buncha damn yankees, Monroe and Shreveport are too close for comfort.

Nashville and Atlanta don't feel Southern at all.

Knoxville did, at least back when we visited.

I think it's fair to say that there is a large urban/rural divide in our country, and that a lot of places in rural Illinois (and California) feel more like places in rural Tennessee than they do like urban places in Illinois. That being said, my own experience is that, yes, the midwest has plenty of examples of that urban/rural divide, but no, rural midwest isn't really quite the same as rural south, just like urban midwest isn't quite the same as urban south. Just my $.02. Big picture, we're all a lot more alike than the chattering masses want us to believe.

I was going to suggest I-70 as the starting place of the South, not 80.

My college roommate and the other 2 guys from his little burg in my fraternity were from East Central Kansas.  One of them was nicknamed Cooter, as his accent was pure Dukes of Hazzard.  All 3 of them sounded like they were raised in the South.

I think there must be pockets in most states.

there's a difference between them - 80 gets the south started in Iowa, not so much Nebraska

70 in Missoura gets deep south - not so much in Kansas

Nebraska & Kansas too much western

Big picture, we're all a lot more alike than the chattering masses want us to believe.
Back when Anthony Bourdain was alive (too soon, bro, too soon...) I think his travel shows essentially demonstrated that.

It didn't matter where he went. And he went to some rough places. Post-earthquake Haiti... Cuba... Iran... Cambodia... Detroit.

But he would talk to people. Really sit down and talk. And what you saw was that people on the ground, no matter where you are, basically all want the same thing. Economic security. To make a better life for their kids. Connection to their community.

It doesn't matter what color their skin is. It doesn't matter what religion they are. It doesn't matter what government they're under. People are just... People.
