Adopting Teams
« on: January 06, 2020, 06:38:31 AM »
I was going down the YouTube wormhole and came across my all time favorite adopted team, the 1990 Georgia Tech basketball team.

I don’t exactly remember how or why but sometime early in that season I became very enamored with that particular team led by a group called “Lethal Weapon 3” because of their trio of perimeter players Kenny Anderson, Dennis Scott, and Brian Oliver.  I followed them closely all year and became emotionally invested in their games. That team made it all the way to the Final Four before being upended by UNLV.  I even got a GT FF tee shirt to commemorate the season.

Did you ever have teams other than your own that you really got into for a little while?  As a kid I did this a couple of times.  In the mid-80s I sort of got into the Oklahoma football teams. Jamelle Holieway, Keith Jackson, The Boz.  In 1988, I dug Georgetown and their brand new freshman, Alonzo Mourning.  But the 1990 Yellow Jackets is the prime example of a team I temporarily adopted as my own.

I guess part of it was because as a kid WVU games were harder to see on TV and their success was sporadic.  It was easier to root for a good team on tv a lot.

Anybody have similar stories?

In college I made the bold statement that Bama would win the NC in the 1992 season... it was in early October when I said that.   As a result, they became one of those adopted teams for the season.    I really enjoyed their NC game vs Miami.

Another one of those adopted teams would have been the ND in 1991 and 1992... mostly because I was a fan of Bettis.

I really liked those Bama teams, mainly because of David Palmer who w/ playing WR/RB/QB was just so exotic and fun back then.

Usually I just pick a team or two to root for because they are fun. Illinois for not ever giving up this year. Zona a couple years because Tate going crazy. I can even root for rivals at times. PSU 94 offense was arguably not the best of all time but they were most beautifully balanced offense I ever witnessed. Marshall was a blast to watch in the MAC days (plz go back to the MAC, you had rivals there plus you fans can you know travel to the games).

Navy is make the list but they've been on a 10 yr run for me... so less about adopting in this context and more about a team I now follow.

When I worked for about 5 years out East nearly half my immediate coworkers were Virginia Tech grads. Needless to say they were more than happy to take me to games in Blacksburg. I was already following the Hokies because of Vick and Tyrod but going to the games and hearing all the office talk through the Fall made adopting Tech a lot more direct.

For 2020, I'll probably adopt either LSU or Clemson.  I'll let you know in a week...

That’s a shame. Sorry to hear that.
