August.
I get less and less sure what this solves. I thought the other early signing day would solve things, but it hasn’t really.

The coaches want order. And a kid who wants to wait goes against that sense of order. So the could will bring all the leverage he has to bear. And then the kids signing in August won’t just be the ones who totally know where they want to go, but instead the ones who are worried they’ll be left without a boat, in part because the coach will play up the fact their might not be room in that boat.

There’s simply so much short term thinking, sense of scarcity and thought that a coach can work out of issues that pushing things early just creates more violent ripples down the line.

you're making a lot of pretty big assumptions.

there are plenty of kids who know where they want to go and are just done with the process and want to sign and get it over with and not have to deal with all the drama and bullshit of coaches trying to blow up their phones, instagrams, twitters and negative recruit and get them to flip. plenty of kids know where they want to go and aren't little drama queen bitches and want to just sign and get it over with and not have to deal with being hounded by coaches from other teams and reporters from other teams recruiting websites hounding them for interviews or quotes.

the baby ass candy ass drama queen attention seeker self-entitled douchebag kids that like the attention and show and drama all still have til NSD in Feb or even longer to make their decisions. having an early signing day changes none of that. no one makes these kids sign or not sign anything. if they want to sign early they can. if they want to wait and take their time til NSD or even past- they can.

edit: and also, with the portal- doesn't really matter now. these kids are not locked in. if they don't like the decision they made- they can just hit the portal and transfer to a new school without having to sit and lose eligbility. so...with the portal- see even less reason why an early singing day is bad.

If a coach says "you can come play at Michigan, but only if you sign now. If not, no guarantees," is seems like someone is trying to make them sign. And that happens a lot of places. I'd bet there are very few coaches who just say "hey, sign when you feel like, you can be just about guaranteed you'll have a spot." And if you don't think that's commonplace, you might just have too much trust in authority figures.

And as you pointed out with the portal, we'll just accelerate shit. Coaches crave order. They'll sign up as many as they can in August. And then when they realize they messed up after a bad senior year, they'll run them off. And a ton of kids will end up transferring before they play. And like one in six signees will get released from their LOIs when their HC gets or hired away. Look at everything we've solved.

It'll always be messy, that's the deal. But, in retrospect with the data we have, deciding later, when every kid is older and more experienced is actually probably better. And it allows the coaching transitions to move more smoothly without mass acceleration to save or build garbage transition classes.

Andy Staples was discussing this today, and that it wasn't coaches, it was ADs who didn't want coaches to have leverage over them because of classes they signed in August

ADs only have themselves to blame

they've allowed coaches to bend them over for the past couple decades
"Courage; Generosity; Fairness; Honor; In these are the true awards of manly sport."
