B1G Championships
« on: December 03, 2019, 12:26:42 PM »
On Saturday night Ohio State will be playing for their 38th B1G Championship and 10th in the last 20 years.  Wisconsin will be playing for their 15th overall and 4th in the last 20 years.

Ohio State can pull within four of Michigan.  Wisconsin can move into a tie with Illinois for 4th.

B1G Championships:

  • 42 Michigan (last in 2004)
  • 37 Ohio State (last in 2018)
  • 18 Minnesota (last in 1967)
  • 15 Illinois (last in 2001)
  • 14 Wisconsin (last in 2012)
  • 11 Iowa (last in 2004)
  • 9 Michigan State (last in 2015)
  • 8 Northwestern (last in 2000)
  • TIE 8 Purdue (last in 2000)
  • 7 Chicago (last in 1924)
  • 4 Penn State (last in 2016)
  • 2 Indiana (last in 1967)

It is interesting that Minnesota remains in third place despite not winning a title in the last 52 seasons (1968-2019).  When they won their last in 1967 they were in second place with 18 and closer to #1 (Michigan with 21) than #3 (tOSU and Ill with 12 each).  Since then they have been lapped by the Buckeyes and Wolverines and gained on by everybody.  B1G Championships since 1967:
  • 25 Ohio State
  • 21 Michigan
  • 6 Wisconsin
  • TIE 6 Michigan State
  • 5 Iowa
  • 4 Penn State
  • 3 Illinois
  • TIE 3 Northwestern
  • TIE 3 Purdue
  • 1 Purdue

B1G titles in the last 20 years (2000-2019):
  • 9 Ohio State (could grow to 10)
  • 3 Wisconsin (could grow to 4)
  • Tie 3 Penn State
  • Tie 3 Michigan State
  • Tie 3 Michigan
  • 2 Iowa
  • 1 Illinois
  • Tie 1 Northwestern
  • Tie 1 Purdue
Illinois (2001), Northwestern (2000), and Purdue (2000) will fall off of this list completely if they don't win one in the next two seasons (2020, 2021).

If Ohio State wins, Michigan's lead in all-time titles will shrink to just four.  Their lead hasn't been that small since prior to their 1971 title when they led 22-18 over Minnesota.

Michigan's 15 year title drought (2005-2019) is their longest ever, their previous long was 13 years (1951-1963).  Still, their current drought is at least arguably not as bad as their worst.  In the 18 years from 1951-1968 the Wolverines only won one title (1964) while in the last 18 years (2002-2019) they won two (2003&2004).

Penn State joined in 1991, but started playing football in 1993. They have 4 championships in that time period.

That is what I put.  The only list where they have three is the last 20 years (2000-2019) because their first (1994) was before that.

I know what you meant. I just thought I'd point it out, because in 1993, all the mediots said that PSU was going to come into the league and dominate it. 4 championships later, they haven't. Hell, MSU and NU (3 each) only have 1 less in that time period.

Mediots said similar things about UNL in 2011. Bottom line is they don't respect the conference.

These days I really do like PSU but I remember that history.  I had some friends who were PSU fans who said PSU would win the Big Ten almost every year so it gives me some pleasure they they haven't been dominant at all.
