BYU (2-1) at #6 Wisconsin (2-1) Post Game
« on: September 11, 2018, 11:56:12 AM »
This should provide the first test for the Badgers as they move through the pre-season games. The Cougars have looked a whole lot better than they did last year, which is good from a SOS standpoint. They came out of Tucson with a win against Arizona (the fighting Sumlins) and endured a narrow defeat to an improved Northern Cal team in Provo.

What can they bring to Madison to mount a serious challenge? One thing would be patience, because the Badgers like to grind teams to a pulp. If they can withstand the grind and come up with some good, long drives of their own, they should have a chance.

UW is a 21 point favorite according to the Wise Guys, and it should be noted that UW has yet to cover this year against some silly-high spread numbers. They've been close - 3 points for each game, not that it really matters to anyone except the AP, which has dropped the Badgers 1 spot in each of the first 2 weeks...

I'll try to dig a little more into this, but if anyone has watched any of BYU and/or UW this year, please weigh in.

This game will be reminiscent of the Haun's Mill massacre.

I watched some of BYU v Cal (during MSU/ASU).   I don't think they have much offensively to bring to the table that's going to cause UW any problems.   I agree they are a more competent football team than last year.

How did Tanner Mangum look? I want to say he missed the UW game last season in Provo.

Salt lake Tribune says they might bench him and roll out a freshman.

At least that's what their headline suggests.

The UW players are not taking this lightly - they see a completely different team than the one they hammered in Provo last year. I've read a number of articles  and the theme is the same. I hope they are right about what they see on tape for this season.

"They're playing hard and they're playing physical," said senior tight end Zander Neuville. "They have big, strong guys up front, they have linebackers that are fast and explosive and can make plays It'll be a good challenge. We can't afford to have a lot of slip ups.

"I think BYU made a lot of improvements from where they were last year," Neuville continued. "We'll look back as a team last year, use what went well, and try and use that to our advantage.

"Other than that, we're treating it like it's a new year."

"They love to play football very hard," said senior linebacker T.J. Edwards. "Every snap, whether it's offense, defense, special teams, they're going to come out and be physical. That's always exciting to play a team like that.

"I'm sure they remember that (2017) game well and they're going to want revenge. It's going to be a fistfight."

"They line up and they hit you," senior offensive guard Michael Deiter said on Monday. "They don't get in to a bunch of weird stuff, which is kind of what you expect from a lot of Big Ten teams. They are going to play you how they're going to play everyone and they're not going to surprise you with a lot of stuff. They are going to rely on physicality and fundamentals to win football games."

The words say that. But that's what the majority of player pressers sound like. Just a bunch of cliches and Lou Holtz-style sandbagging. The rare thing is trash talk. Most players and schools do that v. rarely.

BYU is physical.  Many of their kids are a few years older and are mature physically.

but, that post is just kids talking....... kids always say they are taking the next opponent seriously.  Heck, sometimes they make themselves believe it.

when you beat a team 40-6 on the road, it's natural to think you can roll your helmet out on the field at home and at the very least get a "W"

These are all seniors, and they've been coached well enough to see tape and be able to comment on what they see. I trust what they say.

And no, not every team says the "right" things.

That's what I said. Some trash talk. But that's super rare. So not all say the right things. Just most do.
