Bowl positioning heading into week 12
« on: November 13, 2018, 02:54:51 PM »
Michigan and Ohio State (both 9-1) along with Penn State (7-3) and MSU, NU, UW, and Iowa (all 6-4) have clinched bowl eligibility.  Rutgers (1-9) has clinched ineligibility.  The other six are on the bowl bubble:
  • 5-5 Maryland:  Needs one win for outright eligibility.  vtOSU, @PSU.  Not looking good.
  • 5-5 Indiana:  Needs one win for outright eligibility.  @M, vPU.  Maybe?
  • 5-5 Purdue:  Needs one win for outright eligibility.  vUW, @IU.  Could come down to the bucket game for both teams.
  • 5-5 Minnesota:  Needs one win for outright eligibility.  vNU, @UW.  Maybe?
  • 4-6 Illinois:  Needs to win out for outright eligibility.  vIA, @NU.  Doubtful at best.
  • 3-7 Nebraska:  Cannot get outright eligible but if they win out they could get one of those 5-7 bids.  vMSU, @IA.  Maybe?

So of the bubble teams, the Purdue/Indy winner is probably the only team to make it to 6-6.

So if I had to guess on bowl projections.

CFP cotton bowl - Mich
Rose - OSU
Citrus -PSU
Outback - MSU
Holiday - NW
Pinstripe- Wisc
Gator - Purdue
Redbox - Iowa

I see the PAC-12 has a new rule where 5-7 teams can not go to bowl games.

Personally I like this rule, although I doubt the Big Ten would ever adopt the same rule.

I think they thought the $$$ hit they took on perception was worth more than the money those low tier bowls bring in, so the goal was to keep their crappy teams out of bowls.
I'm guessing it's Outback or Gator for MSU.  With the groupings and the no 3 times rule, I think the bowls will try to avoid repeats as much as possible.
Win out, get to 8-4, they are in that top group which likely means Outback, unless PSU also gets a NY6 bid, then probably Citrus.  Lose and finish 7-5, they might drop and wind up Gator.
