The years prior saw more coverage than ever recorded. Lake Michigan was 98% covered for a few years in a row.

You heard right my brother was killing them with the locals up in the Western basin.Still doing well if you want to brave it.Just far enough for me not to make it on a whim depending on lake conditions.Had some fish frys though - there are no words

That's true 847 think that was '14 & '15 winters. Not much snow but colder than a well diggers destination

I wouldn't go anywhere near Lake Superior ice until there's a foot or more, and if the lake is heavily iced over. Too easy for a floe to break off.

Some of my co-workers down in Roch will be ice fishing on the Mississippi River swamps over by Winona as soon as they freeze over.

Resorts on Red Lake and Lake of the Woods are showing pictures of 3-4" of ice already, and will be starting their ice ops this weekend.

Many times the worst areas are near shore where current errodes underneath the ice

Minnesota's practice is cancelled today over COVID concerns. There seems to be a lot of pessimism coming from Bierman Hall about whether the Axe is contested on Saturday.

Yeah, I posted a link above. World wars, Spanish flu and countless other events have not cancelled the AXE, but this might do it. Longest continuously running rivalry in the game canceled by China.

Go figure.

If Minnesota has to cancel this weekend's game, are there any other games looking likely to be cancelled such that Wisconsin could replace them with the other team cancelled on?

My first thought was that maybe Maryland might have to cancel again but some issues:
  • Maryland's opponent this week is Indiana which is supposed to be Wisconsin's opponent next week.  Thus, adding UW/IU this week could potentially result in back-to-back UW/IU games.
  • UW is supposed to host MN this weekend and IU is supposed to host UMD so it isn't as clean as replacing a road game for one team with a road game and a home game for the other team with a home game.  Instead, one of the two that was supposed to be at home this weekend would have to travel instead.  It would make the most sense for Wisconsin to travel this weekend because they are supposed to host the IU game next weekend so at least then the back-to-back UW/IU games would be UW@IU followed by IU@UW rather than IU@UW part one and two.
  • Per the Worldwide leader, the Terps have resumed practice so it is looking like they are going to be able to get to Bloomington and get on a football field this weekend.

Any other teams with COVID issues?

The other thing is that IF Minnesota and Maryland both had to cancel, in theory they could rearrange UW's, IU's, UMD's, and MN's schedule the next two weeks:
  • Scrap MN@UW this weekend (because MN is unavailable)
  • Scrap UMD@IU this weekend (because UMD is unavailable)
  • Replace those two with UW/IU this weekend in Madison as planned but a week early.
  • Put MN@UW next weekend in place of IU@UW and NU@MN.
  • Put UMD@IU next weekend in place of UMD@M and IU@UW.
  • That leaves Michigan and Northwestern without opponents next weekend.  Michigan was supposed to host UMD while Northwestern was supposed to travel to Minnesota so simply add Northwestern at Michigan.
Good effects:
  • Maximum number of games given the available teams.
  • Everybody keeps their home/away balance.
Bad effects:
  • Divisional games replaced by non-divisional games:  Michigan and Northwestern play each other instead of UMD/MN.  It really doesn't matter much.  Minnesota can't realistically catch Northwestern for the B1G-W championship anyway and Michigan is in a similarly bad spot in the B1G-E.  However, it might matter for arranging the teams for the Champions weekend thing because you wouldn't have H2H's for those divisional games.

I'd go for that. Lots of scenarios. Terrible planning in Rosemont.

It would also be kind of funny to watch M fans cry foul about having to play Northwestern all of a sudden.
