Chaos Saturday! Upsets galore. Down goes Bama, Tenn, Mich and USC. I love it.

This is also the week I can start to have fun with the transitive property in college football.
So here is who is better than who based on who has beat who so far

PSU > ILL > Neb > Rut > Wash > Mich > minn > USC > Wisc > Purdue.

Anyway, here are my power rankings for this week and who has beat who so far.

1. Ohio St. - beat MSU and Iowa

2. Ore - beat MSU and UCLA

3. Penn St - beat Ilinois and UCLA

4. Indiana - beat MD, NW, and UCLA

5. Iowa - lost to OSU and beat Minn

6. Illinois - Beat Neb in OT and lost to PSU

7. Nebraska - lost to ILL in OT, beat Rutgers and Pur

8. Rutgers - lost to Neb and beat Wash

9. Washington - Lost to Rut and beat Mich and NW

10. Michigan - lost to Wash, beat Minn and beat USC

11. Minnesota - lost to Iowa, lost to Mich and beat USC

12. USC - lost to Mich and Minn, beat Wisc

13. Wisconsin - lost to USC and blew out purdue

14. Mich St - lost to OSU and Ore, beat MD

15. MD - lost to Ind, lost to MSU

16. NW - lost to Ind and Wash

17. UCLA - lost to Ore, PSU and Ind

18. Purdue - lost to Neb and Wisc

OSU: I was impressed at them chewing up Iowa for over 200 yards on the ground. Times have changed.
Oregon: Disposed of Sparty in more convincing fashion than OSU did. Should be a heck of a game Saturday.
PSU: Fairly pedestrian effort against UCLA, but they are solid
Indiana: Rolling up Northwestern to the tune of 41 points and over 500 yards is impressive.
Washington: First time I really watched them and thought they were very impressive offensively. Their losses feel fluky, too
Michigan: I dunno, not sure if this is too high. If they can get Tuttle up to speed and run a coherent offense, they will have a solid team
USC: A couple tough road losses but a quality team
Iowa: Got run over, but the schedule looks pretty forgiving
Illinois: Solid if unspectacular
Nebraska: That was a rough day for the quarterback
Rutgers: Same
Minnesota: Showed some spunk in getting a tough win
MSU: Got their rough games out of the way, think they can bite some people
Maryland: Man' it's tough keeping track of 18 teams
Wisconsin: Blew out Purdue, which means they are a FBS football team
UCLA: Maybe they are getting things figured out on defense
Northwestern: Can't stop the Hoosier machine
Purdue: I am struggling to understand how they are this bad

1) tOSU beat a solid but overmatched opponent,find out lots when they hit the road and go up in class in Autzen
2)PSU solid not spectacular win going out west to play what could be an angry Trojan Team
3)Ducks see Ohio State
4)Hoosiers 6-0 and getting traction QB Roarke is leading the Big in both Yards and ratings and the defense appears stout
5)Huskies move up after taking down Michigan
6)USC - lost 2 close ones and got another coming but at least at home
7)Illini - The Berts beat a 1-4 Kansas and headed to W.Layfayette for more of the same
8) M - slide down the rankings with QB woes
9)'Skers - beat an undefeated Schiano squad
10)Rutgers - 1st loss to a UNL team on the rise
To the rest - it's the BIG TEN come on up

1) Ohio State: because I'm used to doing this.
2) Penn State: because they are a little closer to being a true Big Ten team than Oregon.
3) Oregon: wins--and they kicked the snot out of MSU--it wasn't as close as the score reflected, which wasn't close.
4) hmmmm: long-distance travel is hard, so who gets punished the least...
Washington: recency bias.
5) Michigan: best loss of the group.
6) USC: is Minnesota worse than Rutgers? Probably?

And then the also-rans...
7) Iowa: because I'm used to this.
8) Illinois: good win over Nebraska, played respectably in Happy Valley.

Now I'm really just guessing...
9) Nebraska: quality wins over Colorado* and Rutgers.
10) Rutgers: quality wins over Washington and Virginia Tech (whose record isn't great, but look pretty decent)
11) Minnesota: quality win against USC; sad loss to Michigan, questionable loss to UNC.
12) Wisconsin: yeah, I'm going with my gut and my bias here: HUGE game against Rutgers this weekend. If this team finishes 8-4, that will be a surprisingly good season.
13) but but but what about Indiana!?! PROVE IT. I'm guessing Indiana finsishes 2-4. Kudos if it does, and finishes 8-4, but that's a different 8-4 than the team I put ahead of it.

Bringing up the rear:
14) Sparty: because it beat Maryland on the road.
15) Northwestern: might not be that bad.
16) UCLA: same.
17) Maryland: same. Northwestern game Friday will be helpful to sort these things out.
18) Purdon't. Purdue is that bad.

*I visited Colorado with my son (senior in high school) this weekend. Beautiful campus. Their student body is irrationally excited about Deion Sanders. The number of times I heard, "now that we're winning again," was amusing for a team that went 4-8 last year and hasn't beaten anyone of note. They do have a soft schedule this season, so that will help (and is already helping).

Purdue Boilermakers 1-4 (0-2)

Result: Loss at Wisconsin (6-52)

Next Week: at Illinois (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: Looking at the schedule for the rest of the season, it’s hard to see where any wins will come from. This team struggles in every aspect of the game, and you wonder if the Ryan Walters era will end at the conclusion of the season.

UCLA Bruins 1-4 (0-3)

Result: Loss vs Penn State (11-27)

Next Week: vs. Minnesota (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: DeShaun Foster is in the midst of a massive rebuild in Los Angeles, and there is clearly a long way to go. They may not win a game until Nov. 30 when they play Fresno State at the Rose Bowl.

Maryland Terrapins 3-2 (0-2)

Next Week: vs. Northwestern (Oct. 11)

Thoughts: The Terps have struggled early in the Big Ten season and hope to right the ship against Northwestern. After that, things get difficult with games against USC, Minnesota, and Oregon. They need to make next Friday’s game count.

Northwestern Wildcats 2-3 (0-2)

Result: Loss vs. Indiana (24-41)

Next Week: at Maryland (Oct. 11)

Thoughts: The David Braun era in Evanston has seen mixed results in year one. Inconsistency at the quarterback position has caused problems all season long. Going on the road this Friday will allow them to right the ship against Maryland.

Minnesota Golden Gophers 3-3 (1-2)

Result: Win vs. USC (24-17)

Next Week: at Maryland (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: Saturday’s win was a big victory for PJ Fleck’s program. He’ll have a chance to make it two in a row when they take on Maryland next weekend.

Wisconsin Badgers 3-2 (1-1)

Result: Win vs. Purdue (52-6)

Next Week: at Rutgers (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: After a turbulent week that saw running back Chez Mellusi leave the team to focus on his health, the Badgers were able to take advantage of their matchup against Purdue. Now, they prepare for a round of games featuring Rutgers, Penn State, and Oregon. It won’t be easy, and if the losses pile up, the heat will only build toward Luke Fickell.

Michigan State Spartans 3-3 (1-2)

Result: Loss at Oregon (10-31)

Thoughts: The Spartans have a brutal Big Ten schedule remaining, with games against Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, and Rutgers. They might not win another game until Nov. 22, when they host Purdue.

Iowa Hawkeyes 3-2 (1-1)

Result: Loss at Ohio State (7-35)

Next Week: vs. Washington (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: The Hawkeyes’ offensive woes continue. Until that changes, they’ll continue to be a middle-of-the-pack Big Ten team led by stellar special teams and a stingy defense.

Washington Huskies 4-2 (2-1)

Result: Win vs Michigan (27-17)

Next Week: at Iowa (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: Washington is still finding their footing under new head coach Jedd Fisch. Four of their final six games will see the Huskies play ranked teams, and will give an indication of where this program currently stands.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights 4-1 (1-1)

Result: Loss at Nebraska (7-14)

Next Week: vs. Wisconsin (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: Rutgers has a great defense and an aggressive special teams unit, but without a passing game, it will be hard for the Scarlet Knights to move up in the rankings.

Nebraska Cornhuskers 5-1 (2-1)

Result: Win vs. Rutgers (14-7)

Next Week: Bye

Thoughts: The Huskers roll into the bye week with a 5-1 record. One more win in the second half of the season and Nebraska will be bowl eligible for the first time since 2016.

Michigan Wolverines 4-2 (2-1)

Result: Loss at Washington (17-27)

Next Week: at Illinois (Oct. 19)

Thoughts: Michigan struggled on the road during their loss to Washington on Saturday. A major showdown with Illinois is looming in two weeks and could determine the course of the Wolverines season.

Illinois Fighting Illini 4-1 (1-1)

Next Week: vs. Purdue (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: The Fighting Illini have looked impressive in their first half of the college football season. The next big test for Illinois will be in two weeks when the Illini welcome Michigan to Memorial Stadium.

Indiana Hoosiers 6-0 (3-0)

Result: Win at Indiana (41-24)

Next Week: Bye

Thoughts: The Hoosiers are 6-0 for the second time in program history (1967). They haven’t trailed for a single second this season, but the second half of the schedule is significantly tougher than the first, and Nebraska will start that second half on Oct. 19.

USC Trojans

Result: Loss at Minnesota (17-24)

Next Week: vs. Penn State (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: Things will not get any easier for the Trojans next week as they host the Penn State Nittany Lions in a game that will have significant implications for the Big Ten Title and the College Football Playoff.

Oregon Ducks 5-0 (2-0)

Result: Win vs. Michigan State (31-10)

Next Week: vs. Ohio State (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: One of the biggest games of the regular season is looming next Saturday when the Ducks host the Buckeyes in Eugene. While Oregon hasn’t looked as impressive as many had hoped in the preseason, a win on Saturday would change that tune.

Penn State Nittany Lions 5-0 (2-0)

Result: Win vs. UCLA (27-11)

Next Week: at USC (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: Penn State is taking a trip through the old Pac 12 with a win over UCLA and a game against USC on the horizon; the Nittany Lions have a chance to make a major statement to the committee for the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State Buckeyes 5-0 (2-0)

Result: Win vs. Iowa (7-35)

Next Week: at Oregon (Oct. 12)

Thoughts: The biggest game of the Big Ten regular season will take place next Saturday against the Oregon Ducks and give the Buckeyes a chance to place themselves in the driver’s seat for the College Football Playoff.
