Big Ten Power Rankings After Week 3
« on: September 15, 2024, 08:37:42 AM »
Another great week of games to over - react to.

1.  Ohio State - OC Chip Kelly was smart to get out of UCLA when he did

2.  USC -  victory over LSU looks less impressive now but it's still good enough to put USC #2

3.  Oregon - finally puts together an impressive win against Ore St after struggling in early games

4.  Nebraska - Defense is looking good

5.  Penn St - dominated WV but struggled against a MAC team.

6.  Indiana -  both offense and defense looking great under brand new coach

7.  Michigan -  this is not last year's Miichigan team

8.  Illinois - win over Kansas does not look as impressive now that Kansas lost to UNLV

9.  Rutgers - kind of a sleeper team.  the team I can never seem to remember when I do my power rankings.

10.  Iowa - gots some issues on offense, and surprisingly issues on defense and special teams to work out.

11. Mich St - I keeping moving MSU up after ranking them last in pre-season

12.  MD - bounces back with win against VA.

13.  Minnesota -  I keep saying I am ranking Minny too low yet I keep ranking them low

14. NW - not looking very good

15.  Wisconsin -  loss to Bama proves Wisc not ready to be one of the Big Boys

16.  Washington -  Wash St gets its revenge on big brother

17. UCLA - last week I had UCLA in last place but I am bumping them up only because I really like their cheerleaders

18.  Purdue - totally destroyed by Notre Dame

I like the huskers getting some top 6 respect

if they beat Illinois, I'll agree

Looks like the ILL-Neb game will be on Fox Friday night.  It will be Nebraska's chance to announce to the nation they are back.

11. Michigan
Has M #8
9. Michigan
In the business world, when discussing mergers and acquisitions the buzzword is "synergy". I once explained that to someone as meaning that "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts".

By that definition, Michigan right now is the opposite of synergy. If you look at the parts they are easily top four but if you look at the results, I can't disagree with 7-11 as ranked by @LittlePig , @Badger1969 , @Benthere2 , and @847badgerfan .

  • OSU: Ain't played nobody
  • USC: Defense looked better against Utah State than Utah's did. A USC that plays defense is a real team.
  • Oregon: Finally looked the part of preseason expectations.
  • PSU: Still sorting them out
  • Indiana: I'm a believer
  • Nebraska: Same, Colorado's defense may not be as bad as I thought
  • Michigan: Tough to rank, but seems like a team that will improve
  • Rutgers: Hell why not
  • Iowa: Feels like something missing in the Iowa recipe
  • Illinois: Ranked Illinois!
  • Minnesota: Competent performance
  • Washington: Boffed the ending
  • MSU: More competent this season
  • Maryland: Still strong in the noncon
  • Wisconsin: They just sorta stink
  • Northwestern: Mostly unwatchable
  • UCLA: Garbage
  • Purdue: Full on stink

Glad to see that by this point preseason rankings aren’t giving teams like Wisconsin and Michigan much benefit-of-the-doubt. Case in point, Indiana is ranked mostly above both. Some might say the Hoosiers have yet to proven anything against a worthwhile opponent, but to open the season with blowouts Vs FIU, Western Illinois, and cellar-dwelling UCLA (see below image) is how well-rounded teams should look before the schedule toughens. I can definitely see the Hoosiers beating currently ranked #22 Nebraska (Oct 19) and #18 Michigan (Nov 9) at home. Their only certain underdog game will be @Ohio State Nov 23.

Meanwhile, Michigan and Wisconsin not only showed up without answers at the hands of more physical, more talented opponents (Texas, Alabama) but both appeared uninspired and limited Vs the early push-arounds on their schedule with sputtering offenses and lengthy stretches of unfocused, lapsed play. Michigan and Wisconsin look like they’re headed for 6-6 seasons. And both face USC by the end of this month.

I think we'll learn a LOT about our league by watching USC the next four weeks.  They have what could be a brutal stretch coming up of:
  • at #18 Michigan on Saturday
  • vs Wisconsin on 9/28
  • at Minnesota on 10/5
  • vs #10 Penn State on 10/12
Preseason that was @#9, vsORV, @n/a, vs#8.  It looks a little more manageable now but still that is a rough group especially when factoring in all of the travel.

Within this thread USC is ranked #2 by everyone except the one Buckeye-hating M fan who stuck them ahead of the Buckeyes probably out of spite.  Otherwise they are right behind the Buckeyes and not far ahead of the Ducks.  The interesting thing is that the Trojans play neither Ohio State nor Oregon in the regular season this year.

If the Trojans beat Michigan they have a pretty clear path to the B1GCG most likely against the tOSU/Ore winner.  Even if they lose in Ann Arbor, they could still get there it just depends on winning out and how the tiebreakers work out for them.
