Seems from reading Hammer & Rails that Purdue's DC has made changes.

Moved from a softer zone defense that was getting picked apart mercilessly to more man. Also changed LB assignments to be less complex and "let the kids play".

Certainly seemed to be a different defense the last couple of weeks. Not that either the Illini nor the Goophs are offensive powerhouses, but they held the Illini to their lowest point total of the season and held Minnesota to a tie of their lowest point total of the season.
Not to throw cold water but, I'm going to throw some cold water. The first team or two that you play after a change are at a disadvantage because they don't have any film and don't know what to prepare for but at this point that effect is probably gone, right?

That's fair.

I'd still call this a "yes and no" answer though. Because IMHO it's not just scheme. The bit that I described about simplification and "let the kids play" largely suggests that the team was simply underperforming its talent level with the old scheme.

So yes, a team making a change has an immediate advantage because the teams they're playing might be preparing for something obsolete. But no, in the sense that if the change better aligns to the team's capabilities that they CAN execute, you'd expect higher performance than a scheme which they CAN'T execute.

(Of course, all of this is based on message board analysis, so maybe it's inaccurate and not worth squat.)

That's to damn bad really as they haven't had a shot at the top for a long time and really made some inroads. Then the rugs pulled out
