A lot of smart kids do a lot of dumb things. Including taking pictures that were not intended for mass consumption, that other people can't resist.

But I'll go a step further about these athletes: given the amount of work they put into their sports, most of them, if they spent 1/2 to 3/4 of that effort on education, would be fantastic students. But that's easier said than done because throwing and chasing a ball is often a lot more fun--and gets a lot more likes--than crushing an English paper or a math proof.

My friend that went to Northwestern was shocked by how dumb their football players were.

Especially at Wisconsin ::)

They look smart to me. No different than the US women's soccer team winning the World Cup.

Not true. A lot of these kids are really smart.
I'll dig it up if I have to but a number of years ago some national news publication did a comparison of the avg SAT scores of football players and students at-large and sorry but you are just plain wrong here.  There are undoubtedly some really smart ones but the averages, INCLUDING at Wisconsin, were pathetic.  IIRC, Michigan had the highest SAT scores for football players and theirs were so low that @Brutus Buckeye 's comment that they couldn't get into Clown College if they weren't great athletes is apt.  Wisconsin's scores were, IIRC, better than most B1G schools but lower than Michigan's so yeah, Clown College rejects if they couldn't ball.

I remember the article because it was a big part of my ongoing disillusionment with the sport in general and realization that they simply aren't legitimate students at ANY B1G school (NU possibly excepted because they are non-public and therefore simply refused to answer the questions - That said, if NU's scores were anything to write home about they probably would have shared them so make of that what you will . . .).

I'll bet Wisconsin's highs are better than most in the SAT department.

Of course they have exceptions for athletes, and it has definitely gotten more relaxed in recent years.

There certainly are a lot of UW football players in the College of Agriculture overall, but at least those are BS degrees and not a BA. The Communication Arts BA has also been popular, but not a useful degree really.

They also have had more than their fair share in Business, Engineering, Sciences, etc. Much more than most.

They don't publish majors for everyone anymore so it's tough to say with absolute certainty. I suspect the ones not published are undeclared.

The academics at most of these schools are messy, not all kids, obviously. That’s life.

I mostly pointed out Jones, whose choices were a mid-major with decidedly liberal standards and grayshirting, plus his own admission, probably fell into that bucket, which is fine. John Clay wasn’t a scientist. I wouldn’t let Shelby Harris tutor my elementary schooler.

John Clay had a lot of work to do in the summer before he was allowed in. Racine isn't known for great schools. I don't know how Barry got him in, but he did have a friendly Dean in the College of Ag back in the day.

FWIW, my old man was an engineering professor at Stanford, a place where plenty of athletes get in with lower academic achievement than the average student. He said he found the student athletes were generally among his favorite students. They tended to be more focused and more disciplined (on average). I never heard him complain that those kids had no business being in his classes--and that definitely included football players.

The worst engineer I've ever worked with was a Stanford grad.  He believed he was better and smarter than everyone despite his near-constant failures.  He got horse-traded to another team, I guess the other team's boss owed mine some favors.  His replacement was an MIT guy, much much better.

I've worked with Stanford-educated lawyers that I felt similarly about (although most are top notch).
I'm sorry--but not as sorry as my dad would be--that you had that experience, but there are assholes everywhere.

Jones made himself the poster boy for all of this by saying the quiet part out loud. Krenzel was the poster boy for the other side with his medical studies. He went on to use his name to sling insurance around Columbus, after an unsuccessful stint in local sports talk radio.
