Battle of the Varmints SOC 10/13/18
« on: October 13, 2018, 06:27:49 AM »
It was a cold wakeup call when I fed the dogs this morning. 39 degrees made me wanting to find some firewood.  Regardless, heck of a day in college football today.  I'll be around all day - my wife is going to Bowling Green for homecoming or something, and I'm left to battle my girls into doing things that don't distract me from football.

Not sure if that will lead to some food or not.  It's a good day to make some chili, but I'm all out of beans and don't know if I'll get to the store.

Well the great news is, there are no beans in chili, so you're all good!

Horns play Baylor today at 2:30 Central.  (Kick out Baylor obviously).  Major opportunity for a let-down after beating the hated Sooners at  the Cotton Bowl last week.

This is the last weekend in the harbor, it appears. Everyone is pulling out except me, so no reason to come back up. Definitely not a cooking day, since all the grills are put away. Probably gonna go out for some grub and watch a little football after my chores around here are done and after a final boat ride for the season.

It has been unusually warm down here until yesterday when a touch of chill hit the air, but I see the high Ts are back in the 80s next week.

This is the wife's first time in ATL so she is not really aware of how it can be around these parts.  She claims to like the heat anyway, so we're good on that front.  I think the winters are about like they are in Paris, but with more blue sky.  When it gets coldish here, it's usually with blue skies.

Blue sky, oh my, you're my sunny day

And I don't know what to make of UGA yet, but I suspect we'll find out today.

The wife bought me a French press a while back so I feel compelled to use it.  I can't tell any difference versus the old coffee maker.  I'd use a percolator if we had one.  The wife has a Nespresso machine.  We were looking at new ones in the mall the other day.  She likes the sleek lines of the new ones.  I guess they are ornaments now, like a painting on the wall or a sculpture or something, a piece of art.

It's an easy Christmas buy I guess.

It's coffee for crying out loud.  I'm not a conniseur which is a word I can't spell.

Trying to decide what to throw in the oven later today. Not sure but it's going to be something heavy. The options are meatloaf, stuffed flank steak rolls, asparagus- and muenster-stuffed chicken breast, cordon bleu. I'm overzealous and sometimes short on time, so - today, tomorrow or Monday - they are all prepped for the (?) oven. (Maybe the steak rolls belong on the grill or frying pan. Undecided. Will accept advice.

Ever do a meat loaf in cast iron on the grill (indirect heat)?

I have a flatiron steak in the fridge.

We picked up some cut tenderloin beef steaks from Costco on Wednesday and there is one left, enough for dinner, so we'll probably finish that after the LSU game.  We can't have gas or charcoal grills here, bummer.  I'm using a GFG now, which is not as bad as it could be.

I might try the hot cast iron approach.  The wife likes her steaks blu rare and it's hard to get without a thick piece of beef.

The wife wants an inductive cooktop (again).  We're in the initial stages of a kitchen redo.  The Miele induction stoves are pricey.
