A few noteworthy observations:

  • Iowa's former future head coach is having a miserable year at Arkansas.
  • Iowa hired NDSU's offensive coordinator for this season, and converted him to offensive line coach, a coaching position at which he has no prior experience.
  • Iowa promoted its offensive line coach to offensive coordinator. And the offense stinks.
  • Iowa's offensive line sucks at run blocking.
  • Iowa's current future head coach is having a miserable season at offensive coordinator.

In the meantime, ISU has snatched "best team in the state" away from Iowa.  Glad we played them when we did, because Iowa State would probably destroy Iowa if they played this weekend.

That said, lots of growing pains this year.  The defense is holding its own, but probably doing a little too much "bending" for my liking.  Part of the reason why Iowa stinks on offense is that they tend to start with piss-poor field position.  It's hard to score points when your offense has 85+ yards of green a significant percentage of the time.  Poor execution and all-around sloppiness are just two more ingredients to a pretty pathetic recipe.

And it's maddening because at the very least, the passing game is showing some potential.  Stanley *finally* connected on a deep pass, and the pass protection is definitely improved.  They are still way too reliant on the run when it clearly is not working this year - if Iowa is going to have any chance of hanging with teams like Wisconsin or OSU, they need to start chucking it early and often and hope it opens up the run game.  They just can't run the ball 60% of the time this year.

That's right Fezzador.

Going forward, Iowa has to throw on first down with regularity.

Iowa State's recruiting has picked up too. They have a 4* and lots of 3*s. Usually they are intermingling quite a few 2* players. Iowa State probably turned the corner, more or less, permanently, unless Matt Campbell is siphoned off to a school like Tennessee, or Nebraska.

Talk about pulling the cart before the horse.  Campbell is definitely making serious progress in Ames, but they could easily fizzle out and finish 6-6.  (yes, being bowl-eligible is an accomplishment at ISU but the media pundits are anointing him CFB's next 'golden boy').

His accomplishments may not even come close to rivaling KF's, but his brand of football is a helluva lot more exciting to watch.

ISU has a rough waters ahead:

TCU
West Virginia
Oklahoma St
Baylor
K-State

Baylor is 0-7. Each of the other schools could very well beat Iowa State, and they could finish 6-6. I was looking at a 3-4 win season for them at the start of the year. Bowl eligibility is now probable. It is a turn around.
