Lmao. That is terrific. Both the meme and that movie. That was Johnny Depp at his best. Honestly it was the only good Pirates movie. Haven't seen them all- but saw the original 3. The two sequels were pretty MEH maybe even bad- but that first movie and his performance- god damn was it incredible. He should've won the Oscar for that. He got jobbed if you ask me.

My prior rankings are in parentheses in chronological order from most recent at L to preseason at R:

  • Ohio State (1,1,2,1,1,1), Looked pretty "meh" and won by 29 on the road.
  • Michigan (2,3,3,2,2,2), At this point they look better than PSU and not as good as tOSU, big test this weekend!
  • Penn State (3,2,1,3,4,4), Big test this weekend!
  • Illinois (7,11,10,10,13,9), Really you could argue for any order for #4 though #7.  All four teams have good and bad performances on their resume's.  At this point I'm just writing off Illinois' baffling loss in Bloomington and saying they look like #4 now.
  • Minnesota (4,4,4,5,6,8), I might as well leave the Gophers here and figure that we'll find out this weekend.
  • Purdue (6,9,7,7,7,7), Playing Nebraska this weekend for first in the B1G-W!
  • Maryland (5,5,8,8,9,12), Tough loss.  Still, the Terps are 4-2/1-2 and have the two worst teams in the league followed by a week off.  Maryland *SHOULD* achieve bowl eligibility in October!
  • Iowa (8,7,11,11,8,6), I still don't know what to think of Iowa.  Their defense is so good that they kept it close with Michigan and are a credible threat to upset anyone including tOSU in Columbus in a couple weeks.  Conversely, their offense is so bad that anyone is a credible threat to beat them and they could easily lose at home to Northwestern the week after playing in Columbus.
  • Wisconsin (9,6,5,6,3,3), Maybe the big win over Northwestern was just what they needed?  If they can beat Michigan State this weekend they'll quietly be within a game of the B1G-W leaders.
  • Nebraska (12,13,14,14,14,14), Crawling out of the cellar one win at a time.  Two weeks ago they beat Indiana so I moved them ahead of the Hoosiers.  Last week they beat Rutgers so I moved them ahead of the Scarlet Knights.  Now they are traveling to Purdue for a match-up of two of the three co-leaders in the B1G-W.  If they win and Minnesota beats Illinois, the Cornhuskers will be alone in first place in the B1G-W.
  • Michigan State (10,8,6,4,5,5), What a change a year makes.  If they can't beat Wisconsin this weekend (and I don't think they can), they'll probably be 2-7 when Rutgers visits in mid-November.
  • Rutgers (11,10,9,9,10,13), That was a devastating loss.  The Scarlet Knights are still .500 at 3-3 overall and they host Indiana next weekend which should be win #4 but getting to six wins and bowl eligibility is a stretch goal at this point.
  • Indiana (13,12,12,12,12,10), How on earth did this team manage to beat Illinois?
  • Northwestern (14,14,13,13,11,11), Honestly, 14th simply isn't low enough of a ranking for this team.

Chart of relative performance against B1G opponents:

Explanation of the above:
Penn State and Minnesota have played two B1G games each.  The other 12 B1G teams have played three games each.  What I have done above is to rank the performances against each team based solely on margin of victory/defeat.  For the 12 teams that have played three opponents, those are simply ranked 1, 2, 3.  For the teams that have only played two opponents they are ranked 1.5 and 2.5 (on the theory that if they HAD played three the best would either be 1 or 2 and the worst would either by 2 or 3).  So a few examples:
Against Ohio State:

  • MSU lost by 29
  • UW lost by 31
  • RU lost by 39
Against Michigan:
  • UMD lost by 7
  • Iowa lost by 13
  • IU lost by 21
Against Rutgers:
  • tOSU won by 39
  • Iowa won by 17
  • UNL won by 1
Against Northwestern:
  • UW won by 35
  • PSU won by 10
  • UNL lost by 3
Then, as you can see above, I've calculated the average for each B1G team.  The disadvantage is that obviously I am applying no "eye test" and I'm not adjusting for weather or injury or anything like that.  The other disadvantage (at least early in the season) is that schedules aren't balanced so it is possible that your team might be third because that opponent's other two opponents were two REALLY good teams or that your team might be first only because that opponent's other two opponents were two REALLY bad teams.  The advantage is that this is purely and 100% objective.  So here are the rankings based on this method:
  • 1 Ohio State
  • 1 (tie) Michigan
  • 1.5 Penn State
  • 1.67 Purdue
  • 2 Maryland
  • 2 (tie) Iowa
  • 2 (tie) Wisconsin
  • 2.17 Michigan State
  • 2.17 (tie) Northwestern
  • 2.33 Illinois
  • 2.33 (tie) Indiana
  • 2.5 Minnesota
  • 2.67 Nebraska
  • 2.67 (tie) Rutgers

Iowa (8,7,11,11,8,6), I still don't know what to think of Iowa.
Iowa is not a credible threat to beat Ohio State. And, it would be difficult to believe they could "easily" lose to Northwestern. I agree with your posts elsewhere that B.F. reports to the Iowa A.D., and the Iowa A.D. can terminate him or demote him. The Iowa A.D. is way too slow on pulling the string.
Bobby Stoops played at Iowa. Stoops saw how difficult it was for Bobby Commings, Jr. playing QB for his dad at Iowa when things went south. For sale signs were placed in the yard of the Commings home. Commings was run out of Iowa City. For this reason Stoops said he would not coach his kids at the college level. His kid Drake Stoops went to Oklahoma University. Bobby Stoops kept his word.  Maybe Bobby was ready to retire young. He hired his brother Mike Stoops so there was some nepotism in his hiring practice, too.
Kirk Ferentz did things differently. K.F. coached Brian and James Ferentz. K.F. hired Brian as a position coach, then promoted him to offensive coordinator, which I thought at the time could be a bad move, and it was. K.F. endangered his legacy, and his son's football coaching career, with this hire. There was no reason not to let Brian coach elsewhere based on merit selection, or non-selection. There are several football coaching levels ranging from middle school, high school, D-III, NAIA, D-II, FCS, and FBS. This seems to have been an effort to groom his son to be the next Iowa head coach, and it was unsuccessful, and hurtful. If B.F. were successful at a lower level and moved up, that would have been more credible. This was not credible.
I could see Bobby Stoops coaching again if the right offer presented.

Iowa is not a credible threat to beat Ohio State. And, it would be difficult to believe they could "easily" lose to Northwestern.
That was a slight exaggeration on both ends. My point is simply that Iowa's championship caliber defense makes them a threat even against very good teams while their personification-of-the-downside-of-nepotism OC makes even very bad teams a threat to them. The best and worst teams that Iowa has played are probably Michigan and FCS SoDakSt respectively. Here is what I mean:

Against the Wolverines:
Midway through the fourth quarter Iowa had the ball inside the Michigan 10 yard line while trailing 20-7. If they had punched that in it would have been 20-14 late in the game. Then anything can happen. Iowa was in that game right up until Petras' pass on 4th and 2 from the Michigan 6 went for . . . one yard.

Against the Jackrabbits:
The Hawkeyes won 7-3. This being Iowa the 7 wasn't a TD and an XP like you would expect for most teams but a FG and two safeties. Given that SoDakSt only gained 120 yards all game and that their FG came off an INT it would be easy to say that SoDakSt wasn't really a threat to beat Iowa but I disagree. The MoV was only four points so literally one play flips the game.

LIke you, I'm fairly confident that Ohio State will beat Iowa and that Iowa will beat Northwestern but I also think that both games will be within two scores in the second half and that is close enough that a few lucky bounces and a turnover or two for the underdog *COULD* flip it.

He said the Pirate character was loosely based on Keith Richards which seems pretty spot on
