Wisconsin was an embarrassment to the Big Ten Conference; down they go.
Iowa may yet win the Big Ten Conference, but I am convinced there are other better teams right now that have an actual chance for the College Football Playoff. If Iowa defeats undefeated Maryland, and undefeated Penn State, I might be otherwise persuaded on Iowa.
Given the hx between Nebraska and MSU I thought perhaps MSU might go down; they didn't, but they damned near did, so I inched Ohio State up ahead of MSU.
I look forward to your analysis, and rankings.

To be honest, the Big Ten looks wide open right now.  The teams that end up at the top may not be obvious right now.  It may come down to who stays healthy and who finds ways to develop young talent and who finds ways to get better.  Of course in the end, it may just end up with OSU dominating the conference again like always but its going to be a  fun ride.

Let's get the Big Ten season started for real.  I need to know who is really good and who is not.

1 OSU - at some point I may have to move OSU down if they lose again,  but I think the talent is there to potentially win out if the coaches can keep it together.

2.  PSU -  PSU wins over Auburn and Wisc don't look as great after yesterday's games.  But nobody is looking that great to me after yesterday.  Good test coming against a decent  Indiana team.

3.  Iowa - As usual, the Iowa defense won the game.  QB Spencer Petras threw his first interception of the year and the difference was Iowa won 24-14 instead of winning 31-7 like everybody expected.  Big test coming at MD on Friday night.

4.  MD -  victory over WV is looking more impressive right now.  Close win over ILL makes me hesitate putting MD this high.  IOWA travels to MD on Friday, so we will find out soon enough if MD is for real.

5.  MSU -  I feel like Nebraska gave the game away at the end, but MSU has some impressive victories earlier in the season

6.  Mich - I found out Mich is better than Rutgers,

7.  Rut -  despite loss to Mich,  Rutgers still looks like a good team to me

8.  Wisc -  I know Wiscy had a chance to win both the PSU and ND games in the 4Q,  but Graham Mertz simply falls apart in the 4Q.

9.  Indy - just not getting it done this year after a really good year last year.

10.  Minn - Can anybody figure this team out?  As long as they are not playing MAC teams, they have looked really good.

11.  Pur -  this is one of those teams that could go either way the rest of the year. I don't really know yet if they are any good or not.

12.  Neb -  its tempting to move Neb up. But there are still hints that Neb is a badly coached team, especially on that punt return TD given up to MSU.

13.  ILL -  As long as they are playing Big Ten teams, ILL seems pretty competitive.

14.  NW. -  NW is another one of those teams that might improve dramatically the rest of the year.  But right now they are the worst team in the Big Ten.

  • Penn State: Nudging them up to number one, because they didn't look like crap, even if they played a nobody. But their big win over Auburn took a little knock after Auburn nearly lost to Georgia State. Still, the defense is good, and the offense is a level above the other undefeated teams, at least so far.
  • Michigan: I mean, I guess. Michigan has looked fabulous for 3.5 games and very bad in half of one game, which was the second half against Rutgers. Is that the new normal? I have no idea. A real test coming up with Wiscy.
  • Iowa: What do I do with this team? The defense is good. The offense is not. Yet another game with fewer than 300 yards, this time against a pretty bad Colorado State team. And their big wins over Indiana and Iowa State not exactly that impressive anymore. But 4-0 is 4-0, and defense is defense, and the B1G West not exactly overflowing with dynamic offenses.
  • Ohio State: Actually looked the part for once, against a supremely overmatched Akron squad. For once, the defense actually looked...fast. I'm not sure you can really take much away from this game, but if they can get the defense to show up against real teams they are a much better team.
  • Wisconsin: A misleading final score, this was a competitive game undone by special teams and turnovers. Wisconsin is basically Iowa, except they make boneheaded mistakes.
  • Michigan State: The offense came back to earth, and the defense wasn't great, but they ground out a win and are undefeated. Just hold water, they can win the east.
  • Maryland: The Terps are cooking a bit. The offense is good and the defense hasn't been a tire fire. No real reason they can't be higher other than I'm shy on putting expectations on them.
  • Rutgers: Really impressive to go into Michigan and really compete with them. They had a real shot to win, after getting run over in the first half.
  • Purdue: Defense helping them along.
  • Nebraska: They give themselves a puncher's chance but never punch.
  • Minnesota: Pretty terrible loss.
  • Indiana: Hung on against Western Kentucky
  • Northwestern: Flip a coin on who is worse
  • Illinois: Not a completely easy out

  • Ohio State - They beat a horrible team this week, and their defense seems to be much improved.  The loss to Oregon might be what this team needed.  It seemed like they were patting themselves on the back and reading about how great they were, and were not prepared to start the season.
  • Michigan - I'm putting them here because Penn State's rush defense looks a bit suspect.
  • Penn State - The offensive line looks great in pass protection, god awful in the running game.  Defense is stout, but not suffocating.   Clifford making a case for the best QB in the B1G.
  • Iowa - 4-0.  Upcoming game with Penn State at Kinnick should be a great one.
  • Wiconin - I had to stop watching with Wisconsin UP in the fourth quarter.  Somehow it turned into a ridiculous mess.  They have lost their S.
  • Michigan State
  • Maryland
  • Rutgers
  • Purdue
  • Nebraska
  • Minnesota
  • Indiana
  • Northwestern
  • Illinois - If they lose their S in the woods, would it still make no noise?

Yeah, it is pretty much a mess right now.  Ohio State looked like themselves but it was only Akron.  Minnesota followed up a phenomenal performance in dominating Colorado by losing not only to a MAC team but to a BAD MAC team.  Michigan looked great for a half but then looked absolutely pathetic for a half.  Rutgers, contra Michigan, looked pathetic for a half then great for a half.  The score of Wisconsin's loss to Notre Dame is misleading as that was a competitive game nearly throughout but then they gave up a KO return TD and Mertz threw two pick-6's and a competitive game that they could have won became a rout.  Penn State's and Iowa's signature wins took big hits.  Now what?

  • Ohio State - 1,1,1,1 Looked like dominant tOSU this week but it was Akron.
  • Penn State - 2,2,2,3 Not much to learn from a game against Villanova.
  • Michigan - 3,5,5,5 Great first half . . .
  • Iowa - 5,4,4,4 Colorado State is a BAD team and the Hawkeyes trailed the Rams at halftime.  As I look at Iowa's remaining schedule I don't see a single guaranteed win or loss.
  • Maryland - 8,6,7,12 Looked the part.
  • Rutgers - 9,7,8,13 Great second half . . .
  • Wisconsin - 4,3,3,2 Kicked a FG to take a 13-10 fourth quarter lead then somehow ended up losing 41-13. The "somehow" is ugly.  After that FG their remaining dives were:  Three plays, -1 yard, fumble while trailing 17-13.  Nine plays, 41 yards, missed FG while trailing 24-13.  Two plays, 17 yards, INT while trailing 24-13.  Four plays, 43 yards, Pick-6 while trailing 27-13.  Three plays, 7 yards, Pick-6 while trailing 34-13.  Two plays, 8 yards, ballgame.
  • Michigan State - 7,9,9,11 Needed OT to escape Nebraska.
  • Minnesota - 6,8,6,7 It is really hard to figure out a team that looks good-to-great against P5 opponents and horrible against MAC opponents.
  • Indiana - 10,10,10,6 Barely survived WKY.
  • Purdue - 11,11,11,10 A win is a win!
  • Nebraska - 12,14,14,9 Close only counts in horseshoes and hand gernades.
  • Illinois - 13,13,13,14 Kept it close at Purdue.
  • Northwestern - 14,12,12,8 That looked good but Ohio-U is horrible.
