Illinois really screwed the pooch and made me look silly in the process.

Who is the next coach? Time for Santa Lovie to go.

1) Ohio State: until someone knocks them off.
2) Penn State: hmmm, not that impressive, but it's a win. With the next two on my list idle, I'm not moving PSU down. And Iowa didn't deserve to move up.
3) Wisconsin: time to put up or shut up.
4) Michigan: return to glory, or just you wait 'til next year when all this talent will really come together? Finding out soon.
5) Iowa: winning is better than losing.
6) Michigan State: gross, but who deserves to be higher?
7) Northwestern: winning is better than losing, but that Stanford loss ain't looking so forgivable.
8) Maryland? Reality struck this week, but is 3-0 Minnesota really deserving of moving up given its schedule? Still totally unsure on Maryland.
9) Minnesota: wins are good, but it isn't as though these nail biters have come against a murderer's row.
10) Nebraska: finally a solid performance.
11) Purdue: the win over Vandy is better than the Hoosiers' wins over EIU and Ball State.
12) Indiana: no home shocker over the Buckeyes this year.
13) Illinois: gross.
14) Rutgers: idle doesn't SUNJ off the hook.

1. Wisconsin (--) - Complete Package
2. Ohio State (+2) - Owned the Hoosiers
3. Penn State (--) - won an in-state battle
4. Michigan (+2) - I heard they used the bye week, to get that offense in shape
5. Maryland (-3) - I thought this team would revenge slobber kick Temple. I was wrong.
6. Iowa (+1) - Rivalry win
7. Michigan State (-2) - 12 men, we all counted 12 men

No Changes

8. Nebraska -
9. Northwestern -
10. Minnesota -
11. Indiana - looked bad, but I think better than those below them.
12. Purdue - back up QB, meet the only D in the B12
13. Illinois - I like Lovie
14. Rutgers - bad

  • OHIO STATE (1) - distancing themselves from the field
  • WISCONSIN (3) - bye week
  • PENN STATE (2) - Pitt game is never fun, but PSU shouldn't have let them hang around that long
  • MICHIGAN (4) - bye week
  • IOWA (5) - wasn't pretty, but it was Iowa-ISU
  • MICHIGAN STATE (7) - probably the most frustrating loss ever, game magnitude aside, the points left on the board, ugh
  • MARYLAND (6) - Group of 5 loss, not a great look
  • NORTHWESTERN (8) - at least they found a 2nd RB in Damien Anderson's kid (which makes me feel old) because they have no passing game
  • MINNESOTA (9) - I guess just call them the Cardiac Cratogeomyses
  • NEBRASKA (10) - nice to see Noa and Robinson emerge at second options
  • INDIANA (11) - I guess this was not Indiana's week to scare a contender
  • PURDUE (12) - So Jack Plummer was clearly not ready for his moment
  • ILLINOIS (13) - that should remove any doubt about whether this is Lovie's last year
  • RUTGERS (14) - bye week

Results posted, votes through @ELA , 16 voters.

The only really big move was Maryland (down 3.5 spots).  We have a pretty strong consensus on the top two and bottom two but the middle is unclear.  For example, no team got more than four votes for seventh place and there were six teams with at least one vote for seventh.
The bullet train that is Ohio State and the freight train that is Wisconsin are on collision course to meet at Indy in December.  I see no legit challenger to OSU and I’m not sure Iowa has the horses to pull off the win in Madtown.
Based on our current rankings and the schedule, an Ohio State/Wisconsin B1GCG appears very likely.  Ohio State and Wisconsin are well ahead of the field in the rankings and they have a distinct SoS advantage.  Among the top six teams, the Buckeyes and Badgers only play one road game each while the other four all have at least two.  Top-6 teams' road games against fellow top-6 teams:
  • #1 tOSU:  One: #4 Michigan
  • #2 UW:  One: #1 Ohio State
  • #3 PSU:  Three:  #1 Ohio State, #5 Iowa, #6 Michigan State
  • #4 M:  Two:  #2 Wisconsin, #3 Penn State
  • #5 IA:  Two:  #2 Wisconsin, #4 Michigan
  • #6 MSU:  Three:  #1 Ohio State, #2 Wisconsin, #4 Michigan

Curios that there is so little debate about:
14 Rutgers. I mean, we rarely agree about everything even with our own team's fans, but man do we hate Rutgers. Not for nothing, but it's stunning that not one of us would even consider that SUNJ could be better than Illinois or Purdue or...

11/12 speaking of Indiana. Amazing, too, that we are so consistent on the Hoosiers. While we jump around on Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Nebraska, we are pretty darn sure where Indiana fits: not the basement, but no better than the first step up from it.

And Ohio State. In a year that the Buckeyes have a new head coach, we are so used to OSU winning the conference that we just assume. Yuck. (And I'm doing it, too.)

I think Rutgers could be better than Purdue. I was not prepared this week to rank them as such. I would not be surprised if Rutgers were to make a move toward #13.

Earning some respect may take some time.

Rutgers actually will get plenty of chances to get some more victories this year.  Games against Boston College, Liberty, Minnesota, Indiana and Illinois are coming up, all potentially winnable games for the Scarlet Knights.

The final 3 games are just brutal.  OSU, MSU,  PSU.  Could destroy any potential momentum they might have gained by then.

Teams that look better than I expected:  Ohio State*, Wisconsin

Teams that look worse than I expected:  Michigan, Nebraska

Everyone else is about in line.

*And that was not easy for them to do.
