B1G Divisional races headed into week 9
« on: October 22, 2018, 10:34:15 AM »
B1G-E:
  • 5-0 Michigan:  Controls their own destiny
  • 4-1 Ohio State:  Controls their own destiny
  • 2-2 Michigan State:  Needs three M losses
  • 2-2 Penn State:  Needs one M loss and two tOSU losses
  • 2-2 Maryland:  Needs three M losses
  • 1-4 Indiana:  Mathematically eliminated*
  • 0-5 Rutgers:  Mathematically eliminated

*Indiana's mathematical elimination is somewhat complex.  They would need to win out and for Michigan to lose out to thus tie the Wolverines at 5-4.  The problem is that Michigan losing out would mean a fifth win for Ohio State and even if the Buckeyes lost all of their other games to also finish 5-4 the Buckeyes would own wins over both the Hoosiers and the Wolverines.

B1G-W:
  • 4-1 Northwestern:  Controls their own destiny
  • 3-1 Wisconsin:  Controls their own destiny
  • 3-1 Iowa:  Needs a UW loss
  • 3-1 Purdue:  Needs a NU loss
  • 1-3 Illinois:  Needs three UW losses, three PU losses, one IA loss, and one NU loss
  • 1-4 Nebraska:  Needs four PU losses, four UW losses, four NU losses, and two IA losses
  • 0-4 Minnesota:  Needs four IA losses, one UNL loss, two NU losses, two UW losses, and two PU losses

Kind of interesting,  in the race between the 2 divisions,  the West went 3-0 last week to suddenly pull even with the east in inter-division games.  This after it looked like the East might run away with it early.

3 more inter-division games this week.
Purdue-MSU
Iowa-PSU
ILL-MD

Will the East re-establish its early dominance. this week or will the West actually pull ahead with a couple of upsets?

Where's the prediction grid that is done during bball season?  That could be useful here in predicting outcomes based on tiers to determine who the projected winners will be.

We don't actually do that for football.  If we did, I think that the tiers (based on our Power Rankings) would be:
  • Michigan
  • Ohio State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn State
  • Purdue, Michigan State
  • Northwestern, Maryland
  • Indiana, Nebraska
  • Minnesota, Illinois
  • Rutgers
So for the three inter-divisional games this weekend:
  • MSU would be favored over PU because they are in the same tier and the game is in East Lansing.
  • PSU would be favored over IA because they are in the same tier and the game is in Happy Valley.
  • Maryland would be favored over Illinois both because they are in a higher tier and because the game is in College Park.

Doh!  I totally missed that Indy-Minn was also a cross-divisional game tonight Friday night.  Oh, well Minny pulls it out and West is off to a 1-0 start this weekend.  Does it all fall apart for the west tomorrow Saturday?

I'd do the tiers differently (not based on our ranking values but my opinion):
1. Michigan, OSU                             (Michigan and OSU are *not* in different tiers)
2. UW, PSU, Iowa, Purdue, MSU
3. NU, UMd
4. IU, UNL, UMn
5. Illinois
6. Rutger                                         (I came so close to combining tiers 5 and 6)

A bit of a shock to see NW technically leading the division.

They did beat Purdue though.

I guess today could change their standing.

Their standing did change. Now, it's more solidified.
