B1G Divisional races after week 5
« on: October 03, 2022, 10:19:06 AM »
In the B1G-E, unless there are multiple shocking upsets, these three games will decide the race:

  • Penn State at Michigan on 10/15
  • Ohio State at Penn State on 10/29
  • Michigan at Ohio State on 11/26
The other four teams are each already a game or two behind, several of them already have have H2H losses to one of the Big Three, and none of them look capable of catching up.

The B1G-W race looks like it will be the most exciting race in the P5 because, at least at this point, none of the teams looks substantially better or worse than the pack.

Right now there is a six-way tie for first with Wisconsin one game back in last.

Upcoming games this weekend

Nebraska @ Rutgers on Friday

Mich @ Ind

Purdue @ MD

Wisc @ NW

OSU @ MSU

Iowa @ ILL

The most interesting matchup to me would be Purdue @ MD.  MD has played good the last 2 weeks.  Let's see if the can keep it up.  If Purdue can snatch a victory, they might be the new favorites in the west.

Also intriguing is Iowa @ILL.  Is Illinois for real or was that big victory over Wisc just a fluke?  This may be Iowa's last chance to show its still a contender.

Michigan-Penn State game was rumored to possibly be a night game. Just got announced as a noon kickoff. Penn State catches a break with that. This one should have been a night game- will be a battle of top 10 teams provided Michigan takes care of business this week.

Glad that game is in Ann Arbor whatever time its played.  It will make or break the season for both teams.  The Nitts have been looking good.  Clifford has the QB edge with experience and Penn State has a couple of very good RBs.  Best RB situation since Barkley.  I would chalk up most of their fumbles on Saturday to it being a slop fest in the rain.  Can't over look Indiana though.
A decade of Victory over Penn State.

All in since 1969

I've not been told the Big House is an intimidating place to play anytime day or night

yeah they have to take care of Indiana. do that and this game will be a HUGE game for both teams. Michigan is getting fortunate to play this one at home. Penn State has not beaten a ranked Michigan team in Ann Arbor since 1995 I believe.

Aside from COVID year- which was a disaster year- Franklin has never won in Ann Arbor- even Brady Hoke beat him in Ann Arbor. Franklin has come into Ann Arbor twice when Michigan was ranked (2016 and 2018)- and got blown off the field both times, 49-10 and 42-7.

Throw out the trash COVID year and Franklin is only 2-5 vs Michigan, with some bad blow out losses in Ann Arbor.

the Hoosiers are not good

any decent effort at all should be enough to get a win

never say never. Look at Georgia the last two weeks. Needed herculean efforts to beat some god awful teams. I've seen Michigan sh&t the bed way too many times over the years. Don't really care how they win, just win. Survive and advance.

What if Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan split with each other and otherwise win out to all finish 11-1/8-1?

In that case the first tiebreaker that could decide it is #5, cumulative record of non-divisional opponents. Penn State would appear to be the likely winner, here are the three B1G-W opponents for each:

  • tOSU: IA, UW, NU
  • PSU: PU, MN, NU
  • M: IL, IA, UNL

Haha, the race for the Big Ten East will naturally come down to who wins the Iowa-Purdue, Iowa-Minn, Wisc-Minn and Wisc-Purdue games.

They would need to win out of course and for OSU to lose 3 games in conference.
