AP Poll trivia

Texas jumped Georgia for the #1 spot.  This is Texas' 46th appearance at #1 which is good for #10 all-time:

  • 140 Bama
  • 105 Ohio State
  • 101 Oklahoma
  • 98 Notre Dame
  • 91 USC
  • 72 FSU
  • 70 Nebraska
  • 68 Miami, FL
  • 54 Georgia
  • 46 Texas
If Texas manages to hold on to #1 for another eight weeks they'll catch UGA for 9th all-time and pass them if they hold the #1 spot for a total of 10 weeks, Texas' upcoming schedule:
  • Beat UTSA 56-7 on 9/14 to move to #1
  • vs UML on 9/21
  • vs MsSt on 9/28
  • off on 10/5
  • vs #15 Oklahoma on 10/12
  • vs #2 UGA on 10/19
  • @ Vanderbilt on 10/26
  • off on 11/2
  • vs Florida on 11/9 - Would catch UGA by holding #1 through this week.
  • @ Arkansas on 11/16 - Would pass UGA by holding #1 through this week.
  • vs Kentucky on 11/23
  • @ #25 aTm on 11/30

So the Bulldogs will get an opportunity to prevent the Longhorns from catching them.  Neither Texas nor Georgia are a threat to catch Miami this year because there aren't enough more polls this season for that to happen.

The latest top-5 includes mostly very familiar teams:
  • Texas - 8th all-time with 277 top-5 appearances
  • Georgia - 11th all-time with 192 top-5's
  • Ohio State - 2nd all-time with 436 top-5's
  • Alabama - 1st all-time with 461 top-5's
  • Ole Miss - 25th all-time with 63 top-5's
Frequent top-5's not currently in the top-5 include:
  • #3 all-time OU with 431 top-5's is #15
  • #4 all-time M with 325 top-5's is #18
  • #5 all-time ND with 319 top-5's is #17
  • #6 all-time UNL with 295 top-5's is #22

The only top spot on the all-time top-5 list that is potentially contestable this year is that #2 Ohio State only leads #3 Oklahoma by five appearances so the Sooners could catch the Buckeyes but for that to be in play the Buckeyes will have to fall out AND the Sooners will have to climb in and for now the Buckeyes are extending their lead so it will not happen anytime soon.

The top-10 is mostly familiar teams but there are a few for whom this is an unusual occurrence:
  • Texas - #8 all-time with 471
  • Georgia - #11  with 372
  • Ohio State - #1 with 705
  • Alabama - #2 with 631
  • Ole Miss - #27 with 138
  • Tennessee - #13 with 336
  • Mizzou - tied for #33 with 95
  • Miami, FL - #15 with 311
  • Oregon - #23 with 174
  • Penn State - #9 with 416
This week Alabama broke out of a tie with Oklahoma for 2nd but they obviously can't catch Ohio State anytime soon because:
  • Ohio State is also top-10 so they aren't gaining, and
  • even if they were gaining, thy trail tOSU by 74 top-10 appearances so it would take a few years even if Bama was top-10 and Ohio State wasn't for the entire time.
Bama/OU are very close (631 and 630 respectively) so second place could get traded again this season depending on how they do.  Other than that, the only possible change in the all-time top-10 is that UGA will likely pass FSU later this season.

Frequent top-10's not currently in the top-10 include:
  • #3 all-time OU with 630 is #15
  • #4 all-time ND with 592 is #17
  • #5 all-time M with 567 is #18
  • #6 all-time UNL with 518 is #22
  • #7 all-time USC with 493 is #11
  • #10 all-time FSU with 385 is nr
