I think these might be "by the rule book" so the right call, but the problem is that the rule sometimes stinks. Because these are examples where the defender can't realistically tackle correctly AND the rule isn't making the game safer. To be clear, I'm only focusing on the examples of targeting where an offenseman if diving and the tackler can't go lower, and since he's that low and never flying feet first, necessarily is going head first.

That's my view as well.   Yes, the calls are being made to the letter of the rule.   Its the scenarios which surface as we've described which make the rule punitive in a capricious fashion.   I think it extends beyond the diving/sliding offensive ball carrier scenario.

It's done nothing to change how guys play.  Feels like nothing more than a "we tried" defense against future lawsuits
