Ten years, divided by 3.......yields 3-4-3.  "ND sucked in the mid-80s" because they had a shit HS coach.  Then they hired Holtz and didn't suck anymore.

Early:  80-82
Mid:  83-86
Late:  87-89

I don't know how you do it for decades, but for age...

Early 40s: 40-44
Mid 40s: 45-47
Late 40s: 48-49

B/C you have to put off that "mid" and "late" as long as you can... I'm getting damn close to my late 40s.

Chuck Long would have been just fine in the NFL except he was picked by the Lions.

Even with that handicap, he stuck around for 8 years or so.
