I don't have an issue with this approach by Bret.  ILL is not a good team.  The challenge has been laid out.  Nobody's job is safe.  Either elevate your play or you are gone. This is what new coaches do when they take over a program that sucks.  Some players buy in while other players leave.  If any of the players have a problem with it, then they can leave.

I'm here for honest coaches.

I also assume he's telling his kids to shape the eff up

I mean...think about what he's saying now. He's not saying they haven't put in the work or whatever - he's saying the roster sucks, and no coach could win with these guys he has on the team. Which hey, may be true, I don't know. But it certainly is a nihilistic way to frame your job to the rest of the country.

“I don’t believe we have a player in the two-deep that they’ve recruited here over the last three years that is really significantly doing anything for us in the playing department,”

I read that as "please step up in the playing department" as much as, "Lord I was left with some humps." Like those kids, if they're not untalented enough, should be able to earn that time. Lord knows, the rest of the roster isn't doing much of that.

Fat Bret ate his lineman's motivation.

IMHO,if Bert was so concerned about a solid roster he would have never bolted Madison for his 30 pieces of silver. I read it like Sam,again these guys aren't getting paid.Get more flies with honey.........I would have said we're gonna let her rip, have fun and see where that takes us.The team was getting pounded on the field they didn't need to hear it from their so called leader.

he should have said this before the season started so these kids could have jumped in the portal

saying it in the press 7 weeks in is BS

It is a curious tactic.

Apples and oranges a bit  I can't imagine how this would have gone had I made these statements about my 3rd and 4th grade vball team this season.   No height, some total weaklings.   You find a way, to seek out inefficiency and arbitrage opportunities.   You can't blast your toolbox like this.

not finding an Illinois depth chart, I know Bert didn't put one out before the Husker game week zero

but, it was a topic of discussion how many upperclassmen were in the lineup - a bunch of 5th and 6th year guys

not sure how the starters have evolved with the losing, but throwing the older guys under the bus after they decided to stick around after the coaching change is crap
