#9 Wisconsin (2-0, 5-0) at Nebraska (2-1, 3-3) Post Game

Well this place has bottomed out.   ~???  Takes til Wed for us to fire up the Big Red thread.

I'll admit I've been out of focus this week and part of last week.
What do I see with Nebraska?   An inexperienced OL, though played well last Friday.  no Tre, an injured Wilbon too?   Izigbo is cromulent.   T Lee isn't mobile. I can't see much happening running the ball this weekend.

Did I say T Lee isn't mobile?  OL needs to play very well, Lee needs to release the ball quickly and at N WRs not LBs and DBs.  D has to make plays and get off the field.   Keep the UW TE out of the mix.  I'd like the under in this game.

speaking of spreads.  N is +12 or +13.  I suspect largest home dog since OU in the '74 game.  I know they were +10 vs USC during the Billy C era, +10 to Mizzou same era and maybe +8 or +9 vs OU in '86.

I'll admit, I've only seen UW highlights, haven't watched a live series.   Unfortunately I'll miss this one too, damn wife's social calendar.  Good event though.

UNL has fattened up its record by feasting on Illinois and Rutgers, and leads the B1G West alone right now because of it. This is not Illinois or Rutgers coming to town Saturday, but UW is also not Alabama or Clemson either.

UW has its flaws but it is also capable in overcoming them so long as the kids execute the coaches game plan properly. The offense has started slow in 3 of the first 4 games only to turn it on in the 2nd and blow teams away.

I don't have a good feeling about this game, to be very honest. Slow starts in places like Lincoln, where the fans are loud and proud, do not lend itself to 2nd half comebacks. The Huskers are confident with their latest wins and they are looking for revenge against Big Red.

I still think UW wins, but I think it's going to be something like 20-10 or so.

Then UW can fall in the rankings because it didn't win big...

Latest line is Wisconsin -11.5.  Still it's hard to count out the Huskers given a night game in Lincoln and Wisconsin looking less than perfect against the Wildcats.
A decade of Victory over Penn State.

My favorite nerd stats have UW as a 75 percent favorite, in the 11 point range. The biggest key is going to be if Neb can protect Lee.

If not, Jimmy L is coming.

That they were able to sack Thorson 8 times was something else. That kid can move. I don't think Lee is nearly as mobile as him.

If they can get constant pressure on TL, the safeties are gonna have a good day.

As I posted on the SOC, either the OL was straight garbage, or Thorson couldn't recognize a blitzer to save his life.  Those weren't coverage sacks.  Those weren't "beat your man" sacks.  Those were guy running free sacks.  I have a hard time believing Thorson is that bad at that as a third year starter.  Maybe Leonard is that good.  But I can't recall seeing that many free blitzers too often in my life.  Even the crazy sack games that come to mind, like MSU having 7 in a half against Michigan in 2013, were due to bad OL play.  Not almost exclusively a lack of identifying the blitzer.

The Wisconsin kids were saying this week that they were winning up front, or beating their man. Of the 8 sacks, 4 of them were when they rushed 4. 3 were when they rushed 5 and 1 was when they brought 6.

I was a little off on my numbers. From the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:

****************************

Thorson was sacked twice on first down, twice on second down and four times on third down.

UW rushed just four men on six of the sacks, five men on one sack and six on one sack.

“It was really just a four-man rush and those guys were just winning,” said inside linebacker Chris Orr, who recorded the sack with six rushers. “I think we have some exotic pressures in our hip pocket. And we haven’t shown any of the new stuff we have. Guys are just winning. They were just flat-out winning.”

If they were winning, they were winning clean.  I didn't really see a whole lot of guys even having a body put on them.

They were clean for sure. This is an extremely quick and fast team.

The big and slow thing is cute and all for the mediots to talk about, but they are not that. Far from it.

They are also very football smart. These guys all love the film room.

I can only imagine what this D would look like with Cichy causing havoc.

Wisconsin leads the all time series 7-4

Wisconsin won the first game in 1901

Nebraska won in 65 and 66.

Each team won their home game in 73 and 74

Each team won their home game in 2011 and 12, although Wisconsin beat Nebraska in the 2012 Big Ten Ccg.

Wisconsin won in 2014, 15 and 16.
