Obviously, a great receiver might or might not make circus catches, but I think in every case they have elite speed and change of direction/route running skills, even if they don't get targetted.  Most good teams have one elite WR you have to double, or at least pay extra attention to.  If you have two, it's problematic.  They will get open on nearly every play.  And we're not even mentioning that big TE who gets covered by a LB.
they don't need elite speed, and there are plenty of elite/all-time great WR's that never had anywhere close to elite speed.

what they need imo, is at least above average change of direction, elite route running skills, elite body control/hand-eye, and elite hands. getting wide open means nothing if you can't adjust to a football in the air and make a catch it. David Bell is the best WR in the USofA imo, and he definitely does not have elite speed. Elite everything else though. D-Hop might be the best WR in the NFL today and he doesn't have elite speed.

understanding pass defenses - it's called a nickle or dime ;)

I still find it humorous that Brett Farve wasn't aware of what a nickle defense referred to for quite some time

LOL.

Always felt like he was one of the most overrated players in NFL history. Still can't believe he made that top 100 all-time team over Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was/is superior to Favre in literally every single way.

Jerry Glanville tells the story the best

Farve may have had the stronger arm

as a rookie with the Falcons, Glanville used to make wagers with anyone that would take the bet that Farve could throw the ball out of the stadium

And if you have three...

The NFL deals with this problem with a draft and a salary cap, to create parity. You want three elite WRs? You ain't gonna have money to spend on your OL and defense, so it all balances out.

In college, there are about 5 or 6 programs that just load up their rosters with all the elite talent at every position, because they can.

Rodgers arm is very strong. He's no slouch there.

Regardless, his overall arm talent is light years ahead of Favre's. His release is way quicker and he's sooooooooo much more accurate it's f'ng ridiculous. Rodgers makes throws in the pocket off his back foot or on the run that Favre could never dream of making. Rodgers is like a mobile Dan Marino. He's like if you crossed Marino with Elway. Super-quick release, pin-point accurate, can run and throw darts on the run. Best QB talent I've ever seen.

I think the general narrative here is that Ohio State has a humongous advantage on offense and Michigan has a humongous advantage on defense.  Maybe we should rethink that a bit.  After @TyphonInc laughably voted M #1 even after tOSU's annihilation of the Spartans I did a comparison of the two based on their common opponents and I think the Michigan offense and the Ohio State defense might both be a bit better than we think:

So Michigan scored about as many points as Ohio State against both Nebraska and Maryland and they were reasonably close against Penn State.  I definitely think that Ohio State's offense is better but it might not be by the margin most people think.

I was really surprised that Ohio State actually allowed less overall  and allowed less in half of the games than Michigan did.  The Buckeyes gave up a LOT less points to MSU but even if you just throw that game out as an outlier you are still left with Ohio State giving up less points in two games, Michigan giving up less points in a game, and two where they were even.

Overall I look at that and think that Michigan's offense and Ohio State's defense are both better than I previously thought.

of course #1 and #2 in the Big should be
