BIG TEN GAME OF THE WEEK
#4 Michigan Wolverines (1-0, 4-0) at Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0, 3-1)
NOON - Iowa City, IA - FOX
Iowa City has been none too pleasant for Michigan football over the past two decades, losing 4 straight, going back to 2005, and 5 of 6, back to 2001.   Granted, during the 4 game home win streak, Iowa was favored twice, and the two times they were underdogs, it was by one score.  The big concern with Michigan this year was the front seven, and while its a one game sample size (the first three games could not mean less), the concerns seem validated.  The Maryland offensive line bullied Michigan, and opened running lanes all over the place.  They did a solid job, last drive against a prevent defense not withstanding, against the passing attack, but if Michigan can't win a trench battle, there are few teams that should concern them more than Iowa.  That said, this isn't just a bland Iowa offense, it's a bad Iowa offense.  They couldn't run on Rutgers last week, and thankfully Spencer Petras had his best game of the season, low bar acknowledged, and Iowa finished +3 in turnovers.  The fact that J.J. McCarthy is facing his second hostile road environment, the first being in limited duty in East Lansing last year, when he fumbled the ball twice, means that is not off the table.  But Rutgers doesn't have the offense to survive 3 turnovers, particularly when they generate none themselves.  Even if, worst case scenario, Michigan turns the ball over 3 times, I have to believe their secondary can bail them out a few times, and unless those turnovers are actually scored upon, I'm concerned just how much Iowa can do, even with a short field.  It was certainly a little surprising how well Maryland ran the ball against Michigan, but it was certainly not surprising that Maryland did move the ball.  Iowa hasn't moved the ball on anyone, even Rutgers.  And while Kinnick is certainly nasty to opposing teams, thanks to Big Noon Kickoff (which for the record, I like), it certainly doesn't give home teams the same type of edge that have fueled a number of those wins for the Hawkeyes.  I think Iowa's run game works, and they generate more offense than expected, but unless their defense can score, those turnovers to touchdowns, turn into turnovers to punts.  J.J. McCarthy probably makes a couple of mistakes in his first road start, but he also makes enough throws to beat an Iowa defense that hasn't faced a legit NFL quarterback since???  Josh Allen in the 2017 opener.

I seem to recall the Iowa defense did pretty good against Josh Allen in 2017..  Allen's stats for the day.

174 yds passing, 0 TDs, 2 ints,  3 points tota. In a 24-3 Iowa win.

Also Kirk Cousins threw a career high 3 interceptions against Iowa in 2010, in a 31-6 Iowa win over MSU.

Going way way back,  I believe Ben Roethlesberger also had his worst game ever in college against Iowa, getting intercepted 4 times in a 2003 game that Iowa won 24-3.

Future NFL studs at QB do not necessarily scare Iowa's defense.  It's when future NFL QB's are teamed up with future NFL WR's, now that's more of a problem.

If Iowa has a chance in this game, it's going to be a 9-7 or 10-9 stinker rank with punts, fumbles, missed field goals, and squabbling teammates.

yeah, I'm kinda with you. I don't see how Iowa gets more than 10-13 points unless Michigan has special teams gaffes and/or turnovers on offense that go the other way- pick 6s, fumble scoop and scores.

Yes, there are just too many things working against Iowa this game.  An iowa offense incapable of scoring and an Iowa defense just banged up enough that it will get tired in the 2nd half.

Feels like a 34-3 Michigan win.

JJ played a really clean game. Gets an A- from me. Would’ve gotten an A if he hit that deep shot he had open for the TD but over threw it by a few yards. He’s GOT to fix that timing issue and start hitting the deep bombs. Michigan has WRs that can get deep.

I blasted him for fumbling…but on rewatch that wasn’t 100% his fault. Trente Jones the RT completely whiffed in pass protection and let a free rush come untouched and blow JJ up. It was on his right side so JJ should’ve seen him coming out his peripheral and maybe just tucked it and taken the sack- but that’s more on Jones imo. Jones continues to have major gaffes in pass protection - and that’s very concerning.

Not a fan of the new DC Minter- he was playing way too much prevent and dropping back leaving huge holes and not trying to pressure Petras. Their pass rush was so inconsistent but it came alive in the 4th QTR. Mike Morris looks like an Adonis- he’s every bit his 6’6, 290 and he’s cut from granite- all muscled up no fat no gut. He flashes moments of serious ability but he goes stretches where he’s invisible. It’s maddening. Not saying he has to be Hutchinson- no one can be- but dude needs to step it up and bring it for 60 mins- not turn it on in spurts. Eyabi Okie was terrific when they put him out at edge and let him loose and just go get the QB. He may wind up being their best pass rusher by the time the season is over. He legit looks like an Ojabo clone- and Ojabo didn’t have his breakout party til Oct last season…maybe this Oct will be Okie’s breakout. One can hope.

A couple of thoughts

I was really impressed with Blake Corum and his ability early in the game to find little holes in the line where the typical RB might only get a short gain.  A few more games like he has had the last 2 weeks and he will definitely be in the Heisman discussion.

Iowa did not lose the game just because of penalties.  It was pretty obvious Mich was the dominant team start to finish,  but some of the penalties called on Iowa did not help its chances if they ever were going to come back.

Iowa did not lose the game just because of penalties.  It was pretty obvious Mich was the dominant team start to finish,  but some of the penalties called on Iowa did not help its chances .  Iowa probably needed to play a perfect game  to beat Michigan, which includes  getting no penalties.  If Iowa was ever going to come back,  it had to play penalty free to have a chance.
Corum is the best back in the B1G imo. He reminds me of a jacked up Mike Hart with home run speed- which is basically the only thing Hart lacked- Hart was slow as sh*t. Corum is a complete back, he can protect the passer and catch the ball as well- he runs hard between the tackles effectively and picks up the tough yards- and then when he's got any daylight he's got the legit 4.4 speed to hit the home run.

Donovan Edwards had some nice plays- and he's just getting worked back into things. By the end of the season that 1-2 punch at RB for Michigan should be phenomenal.

another thought: pretty disappointed with the development of DE/OLB Braiden McGregor. Thought he'd at least show something during these first 5 games- and he's basically shown nothing. Had a couple of nice pass rushes that didn't lead to hits or sacks vs the cupcake OOC slate- but that's about it. He's basically done next to nothing whenever he's been in the games.

This kid was an early OMG 5 STARZ who fell in the rankings because of an injury which caused him to miss his entire SR year of HS- but still wound up a top 100 recruit in the 247Composite- which if you're inside the top 100- you're a big-time recruit imo. Obviously the OMG 5 STARZ! are the cream of the crop- but if you're in that top 100- you're suppose to be pretty damn good. So far- nothing. Not a good sign for him- or for Michigan's defense. They really needed him to step up and be the player everyone thought he could become coming out of high school.
