I I’m going to give an unpopular take. The offensive play calling and coaching is a problem, but Bryce Underwood is overrated. Yes, there will be a mountain of excuses about coaching putting him in less than ideal situations, which I completely agree with a lot of that, but there’s also been enough plays where he had a chance to make a decision or play and he didn’t. I know, he’s 18. But when you are crowned the Lebron of college football, you better back it up. His open field plays where he ran, he didn’t make anyone miss and didn’t outrun anyone. He had quite a few situations where he scrambled into the blitz instead of away from pressure. He’s not selling a fake throw or any of the sort so he can fake out a defender. His passing game down field has been mediocre at best. When there’s pressure, he puts his head down and doesn’t look around while scrambling. Sorry but I always think of how good Troy Smith was at sensing pressure, keeping his head up and finding a way to make a ridiculous play. He throws too many cannon short passes.
This kid is sure as heck athletic, but he doesn’t grasp how to make plays, create misdirection and as bad as the play calling is, he’s also changing a lot of plays that lead to terrible decisions. Also, he definitely doesn’t show killer instinct, he shows his generation mentality of look at me. Taking selfies, signing autographs mid game. Maybe that changes, but if it doesn’t, he won’t win squat and it won’t be solely on the coaches.
