At 245.5 YPG, Iowa is now 131st of 133 FBS teams ahead of the Eastern Michigan Eagles (240.0 YPG), and Sam Houston Bearkats (147.7 YPG).

For Iowa to move up the list its going to take a lot of improvement. East Carolina is 130th and has 282.5 YPG which is quite a gap for Iowa to make up.

Penn State is an excellent team, but god damn is Iowa god awful on offense.

Cade McNamara was insane for transferring to Iowa. He should've went to Wisconsin or Florida or Alabama. He's better than what he's shown at Iowa. That situation is just so bad any QB would stink there. They have no skill talent whatsoever, the OL is iffy, and Brian Ferentz is the play-caller OC. Tom Brady or Peyton Manning would suck there.

As I have thought for some time now, Brian Ferentz' continued employment as OC is inexcusable.

Penn State is a very good team and has more talent. That is not Brian's fault. 76 yards, that is. If this were a one-off you'd just chalk it up to "sh!t happens" and move on but it isn't. Iowa's offense has been consistently terrible for pretty much all of Brian's tenure.
100%.

Brian Ferentz being retained and getting that ridiculous 25 PPG contract was a fireable with cause offense on the part of Kirk.

Kirk should go this off-season along with Brian. It's time for a change there.

Penn State is an excellent team, but god damn is Iowa god awful on offense.

Cade McNamara was insane for transferring to Iowa. He should've went to Wisconsin or Florida or Alabama. He's better than what he's shown at Iowa. I agree. That situation is just so bad any QB would stink there. I agree. They have no skill talent whatsoever, I disagree. the OL is iffy, accurate description - sometimes good, in some ways and Brian Ferentz is the play-caller OC It is not just his play calling - it's his schemes. Tom Brady or Peyton Manning would suck there.
Brian Ferentz, an O-Lineman by trade, is Offensive Coordinator, and QB Coach. This Iowa offense is a bit wonting on the O-Line. However, this O-Line is not as bad as it showed against Penn State. A big part of the problem is the O-Coordinator does not play to all the strengths of the personnel.
Iowa has Kaleb Brown, a 4* receiver from the transfer portal from Ohio State. I think he was targeted once this season.
When your O-Line is imperfect, there are things you can do with your QB, such as the 5 or 7 step sprint out, launch and pass, on timing routes either to a TE, or a curl pattern to a WR. The D-Line cannot target the pocket QB on a sprint right or sprint left. It adds an element of deftness, but this simple play is not in the Iowa playbook.
The O-Line is better this year than last, but it completely collapsed against Penn State. That said, the O-Coordinator needs to adapt, but the most incapacitated O-Coordinator in FBS P-5, cannot adapt.
I am convinced this is more of a coaching problem than a talent problem.

I haven't watched Iowa play, but those stats are amazing after last season.

They are broken, it's clearly not totally personnel related.

is this about the time Brian got heavily involved?
2022??
Not sure exactly what happened to make the Iowa offense tank so much.  Brian had been the OC since 2017 with Ken O'Keefe as the QB coach until 2021.

O'Keefe had previously been Iowa's OC under Kirk Ferentz from 1999-2011 until he left for an NFL assistant job.  O'Keefe was brought back as QB coach in 2017 to mentor Brian, because Brian had never been an OC before.  O'Keefe retired after 2021 with little explanation why.  Guess he was just old and ready to retire?

Obviously.

Look, Iowa doesn't have the talent of Penn State, Michigan, or Ohio State. Everyone knows that so those aren't fair comparisons.

Here are some comparisons that are fair to Iowa or unfair in Iowa's favor, results against Penn State:
  • Iowa had 0 points, 76 yards, 4 first downs, and averaged 3.5 per pass and 1.2 per rush.
  • Delaware had 7 points, 140 yards, 5 first downs, and averaged 3.4 per pass and 3.4 per rush.
  • Illinois had 13 points, 354 yards, 20 first downs, and averaged 6.1 per pass and 2.7 per rush.
  • West Virginia had 15 points, 308 yards, 17 first downs, and averaged 6 yards per pass and 3.7 per rush.

Struggling against Penn State's defense is expected. Being worse than Delaware's offense is unacceptable.
