I like pressing the buttons on the remote, and then watching it set itself up while I sip on a G&T, in the shade.

You know, I can adjust the pull-down shade to any height I want.
I still have some ancient ones in my room. And those spring-roller maps—which hung over chalkboards—were a staple of geography education were built to last many times were manufactured by the same companies like Rand McNally. That from the 1960s that made classroom maps that hung from the chalkboards thru the '80s into the '90s

Hey I'm down with that.  No reason the entire thing couldn't be motorized and automated and remote-controlled from a phone app, using tracks along each side instead of rails.

The only limit to the solution, is your checking account.

We will be getting some rolldown Storm Smart screens in the next couple of years. We are getting tired of bringing all the lanai furniture/decorations in every time a storm threatens us. These are good to about 150MPH. The checking account will not be happy.

That would do.

And if you just adapt that design so it can track down from the top, up from the bottom, or anywhere in between, you've got OAM's original idea covered.  Easy peasy.

It would be hotter than hell on my lanai with all of those closed up. Even if you left a couple of feet open, it would be hot.

This is for storm protection only - not shade.

Good Lord man we all know your thoughts on the matter.  I'm talking about OAM's suggestion for a solution for OTHER people who might want to create shade or block the sun when it comes in low, underneath the shade provided by a covered patio OR a simple awning with no sidewalls.

By the way I have a retractable awning just like yours, on my RV.  It's 20 feet long and it's even motorized.  And, if I have the RV porch facing due south, the westering sun comes in underneath it.  Just like ANY shade structure with a roof and no sides.

Sorry, I should have been more specific-- I have that STYLE of awning.  I don't think it's Sunsetter brand, but I honestly don't know.  But it's been great for the 8 years I've owned it, no issues at all.

Yeah, check it. I'd like to know.

The Sunsetter is holding up fine here so far. I use it almost every day.

He can't not.
