That awning doesn't stop the westering sun for a patio that faces due south, the sunlight comes in right under it, exactly the same as our covererd patio.

Sunsetter makes side panels for that purpose. We had a side panel back up North, for that Westering sun.

It's also nice to have the awning cover the pool, so you can use it and not burn up. Great for grandkids.

Right.  The side panel is the same as a pull-down shade.  And it would block the breeze just the same.

Any solution that blocks the sun from the side, will cut down the breeze from the side.  Come on man, it's physics!

Luckily our pool is now well-shaded by the trees at the back of the lot.  It wasn't always so, 14 years ago when we moved in those trees were much smaller.

Our side panel did not block the breeze much at all. It came under or was not a direct West breeze.

You know, I can adjust the pull-down shade to any height I want.  It doesn't have to be all the way down.  In fact, it never is.

Sigh.  Anyway, this discussion is pointless.  The pull-down shade is awesome, way better than not having one.  I would highly recommend to anyone in the exact same situation as me.  In fact I have-- both of my neighbors with patios oriented the same way, have each installed it and love it.  The End.

We had pulldown screens. I just like the awning better - our space is enclosed. It too has a pulldown shade on it. Here's a pic.

I keep telling you, the awning wouldn't do anything different than the covered patio does.  You'd have to have large sidescreens to do what the pull-down shade does.  It's exactly the same situation.

Our lanai is closed in on both sides with walls, so when we had the pulldowns, it was like we were sitting in a box with no breeze and no view of anything except the walls and the shades.

That's not why we live on a golf course.

We absolutely wanted something different and this works much better for us.

This whole back-and-forth has given me the idea of a horizontal panel to please everyone.
It's made of the pulldown screen material, and connects to either end of the 'wall' space.  It's 2-3 ft 'tall' and as long as it needs to be.

You set it up so the bottom is just below the horizon, as seen from where you're sitting in that area.  It extends up the 2-3 ft, blocking the last couple of hours of intense sun.
A majority of the 'wall' facing west is still open air for breezes, and the worse bit of the intense sun is blocked.

Patent pending...

I'd have to see the design for further evaluation. Structural integrity is top of mind.

They make shades that pull up or down so you can position it where you like and extend for the full length of the opening, or just a part of it.  Something like that on a larger scale would fit what you're suggesting.

I've had bad luck with those maintaining their integrity for more than like a couple years

Yeah, those things suck - even indoors. No chance they hold up to any wind. Terrible design.

I've never used one.  But it's the idea more than the structure that I'm looking at.

I could envision making a backyard patio-sized version for yourself pretty easily.  You could run two rigid poles, one on each side of the opening, and screw it into the top and bottom.  Then I'd take the material part of the pull-down shade, put grommets in it every so often, and stretch it between those two poles.  Move the shade up and down to whereever you like it, grommets sliding along the rigid side-poles.  You could gather it mostly at the bottom, or more toward the top, or somewhere in the middle.  Secure it with thick rubber bands or bungees, over and under the grommets on each side, and top and bottom, to keep it in place.

Pretty easy afternoon project.

I just re-designed it for outdoor use.

You're welcome.
