What's the over/under on Romo making it back on CBS?
My guess is he's out all this year, but if he behaves and rehabs his image some, they'll have him back next season. Potential stumbling blocks could be he screws up again, or J.J. Watt has stellar chemistry with Jim Nantz and CBS decides to move on.
My bet is on CBS Sports carefully finding a way to rid themselves of Romo for cause, but it might take another offseason.
CBS will use Romo's DUI as the reason to find the needed legal cause to do so, but the true motivation to send Romo packing is his contract: A
10-year, $180 million contract that began in 2020.
Keeping in mind how much of a surprise hit Romo was as an announcer when he began calling games for CBS in 2017, there was nothing quite like his predictive commentary, and, at first, viewers (including me) received it well. His commentary carried the added entertainment of a card trick, where the magician correctly picks each card blindly pulled from a deck. See below – I still remember how amusing it was to hear Romo call this specific Raiders-Titans game when it aired nine years ago.
At first Romo’s commentary was a novelty, and once it wore off sometime by the end of season two, viewers began more easily noticing and getting annoyed by his shortcomings: unpreparedness especially with rosters, nonsensical offhand comments, sounding bored or lost, losing track of downs, and overall sounding like he was ‘winging it.’ And all of his negatives have worsened with each season in the booth, most noticeably after signing his monster contract in 2020.
Romo’s was a terrible contract for CBS Sports to talk themselves into, and now, with CBS under new owners (Ellison Family) who are looking to cut overhead across their greater corporate umbrella – CBS News, Paramount Skydance, Showtime Networks, and CBS Sports – the parent company itself has identified Romo’s contract as a cost they no longer want.
