Yeah I watched some of that. I was flipping around, they were playing very poorly, losing 29-10 or something.  Flipped back, assumed the game was over and caught the very tail end where they now led and the Jags were trying to get into position to kick a FG, got the sack/fumble and scored on the last play.

It doesn’t really matter, both teams suck and neither are playoff contenders.

BROWNS had a K.O. and a punt returned against them for TDs in the same Qtr. Take a bow I think the announcer said it was the 1st time that has happened since 2007 or sumsuch :sign0065:

Apparently the #2, #3, and #4 lowest rated Lions players this week by PFF were Alim McNeil, D.J. Reader, and Aidan Hutchinson.  So solid win considering how bad the DL apparently played

Just saw some of the worst late-game coaching decisions I've seen in a VERY long time. I wanted to run this by all of you to figure out whether you think I'm right, or crazy.

It was Washington/Miami in Madrid. There's about 6 minutes remaining, and the score is tied at 13. In 54 minutes of game time, each team had only scored one TD (and 2 FGs). The Washington offense is trash behind Mariota, and the Miami offense has been trash all year with Tua.

  • Washington had the ball, and had largely contained the Miami offense all game. They after getting stopped 3 times with goal-to-go, they have 4th and goal from the 1. They decide to go for it [and fail]. I think you automatically kick the FG and take the points there. I know the analytics often push for more aggressive decisions, but at that point you know a few things. First, if you make the TD, yes, you put the pressure on Miami to score a TD. However, because they KNOW they need a TD, that also means that you know they'll play aggressively. If you kick the FG, you know Miami getting a TD is bad, but because all they need is a FG to tie, they can play more conservatively to try to get the FG and force OT. But the big problem is if you DON'T get the TD, now all Miami needs is a FG to take the lead. I say you take 3 points there and lean on your defense to keep them out of the end zone. It's not like you're facing some offensive powerhouse. They'd only scored on 3 drives all game, and only one TD.
  • So Miami takes over. And Washington forces a 3-and-out... BUT then Washington muffs the punt, and Miami recovers on the Washington side of midfield. They get one long run, and find themselves ALSO facing a 4th-and-goal from the 1. At this point there's 1:45 or so left, and Washington has no timeouts. Miami goes for it. And then they fail. Now I think my goal of kicking the FG and taking the points is even MORE justified. There's 1:45 left and the Commanders have no timeouts. Their offense has ALSO only scored 1 TD all game, and only scored on 3 at all drives.

Both teams passed up chip-shot field goals to take exactly a FG lead, late in a game, facing an opposing bad offense. I mean, maybe if you're down 1 in either situation, you go for the TD to ensure a late FG doesn't beat you. But in this case it's tied, so FG matches FG. Seems like it's a no brainer to just take the points and rely on your defense.

Am I wrong?

you're not wrong

but, I don't think going for a TD from the 1 is wrong either

I will say that one thing I didn't mention is that if you fail from the 1, you DO have the advantage of pinning them a lot deeper than you likely would if you kick off after kicking the FG. But you give up the 3 points.

But I feel like in both cases, the fact that you're late in the game so 3 points might be decisive, the fact you're up against a bad offense, and you're tied so giving up a FG just gets you right back to a tietips the scales SIGNIFICANTLY to kicking it.

The flipsides:

  • If it's earlier in the game, such as still in the 3rd quarter, I think you go for it. It's early enough in the game that you follow the analytics rather than game situation, because each team will still have multiple drives afterwards. And you DO pin the team deep so you feel stronger about the odds of getting the ball right back.
  • If you're up against a good offense, especially in the first case where there's 6 minutes left, it prioritizes going for it. You not only feel that your chances of holding the opponent scoreless is much lower meaning you're almost assured to give up the FG attempt, but also that a strong offense might be able to score a TD on a sustained drive while giving you little to no time to respond.
  • If (like mentioned) you're down 1 or down 2, and kicking the FG means the opponent kicking a FG gives them the lead rather than just maintains a tie, going for the TD makes sense.

But in both of these cases, none of those conditions were met.
