Special teams are not offense or defense and they have a whole separate rulebook governing them.  In the case of a kick the offense has deliberately chosen to forfeit possession, either through a field goal made, or a kick missed. 

But sure, there are probably lots of things that could be cleaned up on special teams, too.

Defensive PI is an automatic first down, Offensive PI isn't even a loss of down, let alone a fresh start for the other side

And on 4th down and in the final 2 minutes, a fumble IS brought back to the spot of the fumble.  So Tampa Bay's fumble that went 12 yards forward last night, because it was on 3rd down, they got the 12 yards.  If it had been one play later, it would have been brought back to the place of a sack.

You're reinforcing my point by highlighting the silliness of the rules, many of which could be changed to become far less complicated.

And yes of course I know I'm tilting at windmills.  The NFL has a lot of crazy rules in place, most of which favor the offense, because they want more scoring and more chaos.

I'm just pointing out some clear inconsistencies that could be easily resolved with a rule change.  But in most cases, the oddball rules are in place, to produce outcomes the NFL wants, rather than in the name of good sport or fairness.

Like, allowing the tush-push which had previously been illegal for decades, in order to favor the offense.  While still handcuffing the defense with the forward progress rule.

My current biggest issue isn't even really a rule, but why they are allowing these K balls?  Kickers were already plenty loaded, they already have narrower hashmarks than college or high school, so we gave them easier balls to kick?

Feels at least once a week a team scores with like 30 seconds left, and the other team needs 2 plays, because anything within 65 is FG range now.  Particularly because (as we were saying in the other thread) we are seeing fewer and fewer adverse weather games.  I've long thought they should move to the college hashmarks, and certainly get rid of these K balls.  But, as you said, more points, so it won't happen

Gotta say, as a Cowboys fan, it's pretty nice to have a kicker who can probably hit one from 75 yards if he really wanted to.

But yeah, juiced footballs certainly aren't very sporting.
