A week in Husker history
The week of Sept. 18-24, looking back in five-year intervals

1901: The program is barely a decade old, but Nebraska fans already have a reputation for football madness. Meanwhile, the team tunes up for the season with a practice game against Lincoln High.

1906: Rainy weather makes for muddy practices for Amos Foster’s team. Meanwhile, T.M. Stuart from Michigan joins Nebraska’s coaching staff.

1911: A season preview places Nebraska among the prominent Western powers.

1916: Alumni in Omaha have high hopes for “Doc” Stewart’s first Cornhusker squad.

1926: Developing more offensive punch is a priority as the Huskers prepare for the 1926 season.

1931: Nebraska’s games against Northwestern and Pitt are slated for national radio broadcasts.

1936: Coach Dana X. Bible suspects his Huskers are being deliberately overhyped by rival coaches in the Big Six.

1951: The varsity runs wild over the freshmen, 81-0, in a public scrimmage attended by 12,000.

1956: The Huskers roll up 401 yards in total offense in a season-opening 34-6 win over South Dakota.

1961: The Huskers score their most points in five years as North Dakota falls in the opener, 33-0. Dennis Claridge and Bob Brown were among the sophomores making their Nebraska debuts.

1966: Wayne Meylan’s blocked punt and Larry Wachholtz’s long punt return break open a surprisingly tight game in the second half as Nebraska fends off Utah State, 28-7.

1971: Jerry Tagge and Johnny Rodgers connect for three touchdown passes, each covering 20 yards or more, to pace Nebraska past Minnesota, 35-7.

1976: Rick Berns and Monte Anthony run for two TDs apiece as the Huskers roll at Indiana, 45-13.

1981: Nebraska stuns Florida State with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns just six seconds apart in a 34-14 win in Lincoln. Roger Craig rushed for 234 yards, including a 94-yard touchdown run.

1986: Nebraska jumps to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and cruises to a 59-14 win at Illinois. 

1991: The Huskers’ 21-9 lead collapses in the final 16 minutes as Washington scores the game’s final 27 points to hand Nebraska a 36-21 defeat.

1996: Nebraska’s 27-game winning streak comes to a crashing end as Arizona State registers three safeties and shuts out the Huskers, 19-0.

2001: Eric Crouch completes 9 of 11 passes and rushes for 97 yards as the Huskers blast Rice, 48-3, in a game postponed for five days because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The president of the American Association of University Professors urged the American Association of Universities to withhold consideration of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s readmission to the organization in a letter on Monday. 

The AAUP warned that recent actions at UNL, including faculty terminations and department closures, have compromised its standing as a leading research institution.

Last December, NU regents approved the termination of 58 faculty members, including 39 tenured professors, through the closure of four academic departments: Educational Administration; Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Statistics; and Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design.

According to the AAUP, these decisions have had immediate consequences for students, research programs, and faculty leadership, including members of the UNL AAUP chapter.

“I urge the AAU to withhold consideration of UNL’s readmission,” wrote Todd Wolfson, the AAUP president. “Unless and until the institution demonstrates a clear and credible commitment to restoring shared governance, protecting tenure, and aligning its practices with the principles that define leading research universities.”
