I saw
this article, thought it was interesting.
Background:
Franklin has now been at PSU for 10 seasons. In those he has four pretty "meh" and six pretty good but nothing terrible and nothing great. The four "meh" seasons came in two groups of two. PSU went 7-6 in each of his first two years (2014, 2015) then below .500 the COVID year, and 7-6 again in 2021. In those four seasons his PSU teams are unsurprisingly terrible against the Buckeyes and Wolverines at just 1-7 with the lone win coming against a Michigan team that was even worse at 2-4 in 2020.
The problem for PSU/Franklin is that his PSU teams aren't much better against the Buckeyes and Wolverines even when PSU is pretty good. In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023 PSU finished ranked and 9-4 or better. Here is how those teams did against tOSU and M:
- L 49-10 at M in 2016 and finished 11-3. Michigan finished 10-3, the loss isn't so much an issue as getting obliterated by what should have been a relative equal.
- W 24-21 vs tOSU in 2016 and finished 11-3. A nice win, tOSU finished 11-2 with their only other loss being in the CFP to NC Clemson.
- W 42-13 vs M in 2017 and finished 11-2. Nice win.
- L 30-38 at tOSU in 2017 and finished 11-2. Ohio State also finished 11-2, not a bad loss.
- L 27-26 vs tOSU in 2018 and finished 9-4. Ohio State finished 13-1, not a bad loss.
- L 42-7 at M in 2018 and finished 9-4. Michigan finished 10-3 so much like 2016 it isn't the loss that is troubling but rather the margin.
- W 28-21 vs M in 2019 and finished 11-2. Nice win but a game they should have won considering it was at home and M finished 9-4.
- L 28-17 at tOSU in 2019 and finished 11-2. Not a bad loss considering it was on the road and tOSU finished 13-1.
- L 41-17 at M in 2022 and finished 11-2. Like the other losses to M, the margin is the issue.
- L 44-31 vs tOSU in 2022 and finished 11-2. PSU and tOSU finished with the same record and this was at PSU.
- L 20-12 at tOSU in 2023 and finished 10-3. Not terrible considering on the road and tOSU finished 11-2.
- L 24-15 vs M in 2023 and finished 10-3. Not terrible.
Even in their good seasons they have one win over tOSU and two wins over M in these six seasons for a total of 3-9. Can they break out?
They don't play Michigan this year and they host tOSU on November 2.
