TV is where the money is. Content matters. NBC is gonna pay more for Wisconsin/Iowa versus Wisconsin/Ball State.
Have you watched Iowa?

I think I saw on another message board that as many as 5 teams could finish undefeated with the 2024 Big Ten schedule.   Can anybody confirm that?

Stole this from a  thread on Reddit.  The analysis is not mine.

https://reddit.com/r/CFB/s/dIykMB3Ipd

The Big Ten could end up with as many as 5 undefeated teams in 2024.

4-team undefeated combinations:

* Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, USC
* Illinois, Maryland, Ohio State, UCLA
* Illinois, Maryland, Ohio State, Washington
* Illinois, Maryland, Ohio State, Wisconsin
* Illinois, Maryland, UCLA, Wisconsin
* Illinois, Maryland, Washington, Wisconsin
* Illinois, Ohio State, UCLA, Wisconsin
* Illinois, Ohio State, Washington, Wisconsin
* Indiana, Iowa, Oregon, Penn State
* Indiana, Iowa, Oregon, Rutgers
* Indiana, Iowa, Oregon, USC
* Indiana, Iowa, Penn State, Rutgers
* Indiana, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers
* Iowa, Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers
* Iowa, Michigan, Purdue, Rutgers
* Iowa, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers
* Maryland, Michigan, Purdue, UCLA
* Maryland, Michigan, UCLA, Wisconsin
* Maryland, Ohio State, UCLA, Wisconsin
* Maryland, Ohio State, Washington, Wisconsin
* Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern
* Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Washington
* Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State
* Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Oregon
* Nebraska, Northwestern, Oregon, Penn State
* Northwestern, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers

5-team undefeated combinations:

* Illinois, Maryland, Ohio State, UCLA, Wisconsin
* Illinois, Maryland, Ohio State, Washington, Wisconsin
* Indiana, Iowa, Oregon, Penn State, Rutgers

Edit: Illinois, Maryland, Ohio State, Washington, Wisconsin also works. That probably means I missed some 3 and 4 team combinations too but I’ll have to figure those out later.

Edit 2: The 4-team combination I missed was Maryland, Ohio State, Washington, Wisconsin

I understand a rare case where having more than one protected rival makes sense. UM/OSU and UM/MSU is one of those rare cases.

But I don't understand how Iowa has 3 protected rivals. Especially since one of them is Nebraska who has been in the conference all of a decade. I get why Purdue/Indiana and Illinois/Northwestern are protected rivalries, but I have no understanding why Purdue/Illinois should be.

Seems like some of them are a little unnecessary.
My feeling is that once Iowa-Nebraska was scheduled for Black Friday it started a tradition that was good for Nebraska fans. They had a Black Friday game with a "rival."
At first Nebraska dominated the series.  After Iowa showed it could compete with Nebraska, Nebraska became another rival to Iowa fans, as well.
Before that Iowa played Minnesota in rivalry week for over 20-years starting in the 1980s. Iowa lost that rivalry week game to Wisconsin, Iowa's other Big Ten rival.
Before Nebraska joined, Minnesota had played Nebraska more than any other Big Ten school. If the Big Ten had scheduled Minnesota-Nebraska for rivalry week, and Iowa-Wisconsin for rivalry week, Minnesota would probably have 3 protected rivals, and Iowa would have 2.
The Big Ten knows it is good for the Big Ten to have a Black Friday rivalry game. A few years ago, Iowa-Wisconsin was going to be moved to rivalry week because Iowa and Wisconsin were thought to be most likely to compete for the Big Ten championship. I don't recall why that changed. Maybe that was due to COVID?

I love having a Rivalry Week.  If that's going to be MSU-PSU every year, than even though neither fan base really considers it a rivalry, they bought in.  But apparently Maryland and Rutgers didn't want to be each other's rival, because they didn't find it appealing enough, while missing the irony of it. They wanted to rotate in with Penn State. Once they moved MSU-PSU off Rivalry Week, they killed whatever little momentum it had

I still don't get how we are giving teams partial shares, but when we threw Maryland and Rutgers lifelines, we also let them demand hosting a basketball tournament, and picking their rivals

ELA, I think it is great you love rivalry week, even though MSU has no rivalry week rival. The thought contradiction is intriguing.  I think it is a shame MSU / PSU was not protected.

I posed a what if preseason, OSU/UM/PSU all finish 11-1.  That is looking fairly possible now, no?  (Not likely, just plausible.)

OSU would probably have the best resume, followed by PSU.

UM crossovers are UNL, Minnie and Purdue
PSU crossovers are IL, IA and NU, also played WVU
OSU crossovers are Purdue, Minnie and UW, also played ND

I would still rate the odds of that happening at less than 25%

First the 3 teams need to split their games and all finish 1-1 against each other.   Then they still need to lose to nobody else.

I'd agree with less than 25%.  Somebody usually gets upset, sometimes two somebodies.

Then they would have to have crossed wins (which is more plausible).
