Looking a little more critically at the above, I note that 10 of the 14 (all but the top-2 and bottom-2) are in a $1M range of $3.2-4.2M.

I think for those 10, that is just what seems about right for a B1G BB Coach and the differences within that group probably have more to do with how recently they renegotiated than with anything more than that.

I'll add this wrt my school. Obviously Holtmann is a bit high at $3.5M. That is almost dead-center in the league and Ohio State's recent performance isn't up to their average. Smith never should have given him the raise and extension. He was previously at $3M which now would be third-lowest in the league.

It isn't really about the money. Ohio State's Athletic Department has LOTS of money. If I were the AD, I'd be perfectly happy to pay:

  • "Izzo Money ($6.2M/yr) to a NC Coach.
  • Top two or three B1G money ($4.2-4.6M) to a multiple S16+ and/or B1G Championship coach.
  • Top quarter of the B1G money (~$4M) to a one-time S16+ and/or B1G Championship Coach.

yup, if the basketball program is important

use the football money to pay the basketball coach whatever you'd like

We are a soon-to-be 20 team conference so what will the B1G BB Tournament look like once we get there?

Some issues:

  • It gets tricky to try to play more than four games in any one day at a single venue. Tickets are typically sold per session with one session including two games. Two sessions (four games) is pretty standard with a session in the afternoon and another session in the evening but anything more than that is difficult to manage. Even six games would be roughly 12 hours of basketball and when you add time between games and time between sessions you'd probably be starting well before noon with your last tipoff getting close to midnight.
  • The conference will presumably want to keep the traditional CG timeslot such that the CG leads right into the NCAA selection show.
  • There us a preexisting issue for ratings and since money drives all of this, we should consider it: The weekday afternoon games have limited viewers because not all of the fans of the teams involved can watch and almost nobody else is taking time off work for these.
So my 20-team format would be as follows:
Saturday 8 days prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 11am, #10 vs #11
  • 130, #9 vs #12
  • 5pm, #8 vs #13
  • 730, #7 vs #14
  • 10pm, #6 vs #15
Sunday one week before Selection Sunday:
  • 11am, #5 vs #16
  • 130, #4 vs #17
  • 5pm, #3 vs #18
  • 730, #2 vs #19
  • 10pm, #1 vs #20
Monday off.

Tuesday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 6pm, lowest remaining seed vs 4th lowest remaining seed (if chalk this is #10 vs #7)
  • 830, 2nd lowest vs 3rd lowest remaining seeds (if chalk this is #9 vs #8)
Wednesday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 6pm, 3rd highest vs 6th highest seeds remaining (if chalk this is #3 vs #6)
  • 830, 4th highest vs 5th highest seeds remaining (if chalk this is #4 vs #5)
Thursday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 6pm, highest remaining seed vs lowest seeded Tuesday winner (if chalk this is #1 vs #8)
  • 830, second highest remaining seed vs highest seeded Tuesday winner (if chalk this is #2 vs #7)
Friday off.

Saturday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 1pm semi-final
  • 330pm semi-final
Selection Sunday:
  • CG in the traditional 330pm timeslot leading right into the Selection Show.

The old 16 team Big East didn't include all teams, correct?

I wonder if this gets us back tonight the top 12 making it.

If not, I think you have #13-#20 playing Tuesday, with the 4 winners playing #9-#12 on Wednesday, then those 4 winners playing #5-#8 on Thursday, with those 4 winners joining #1-#4 for an 8 team tournament starting Friday

Welcome back @ELA !

I'll call your suggestion the "feed in method" because it starts with the worst eight teams then feeds in the next four best teams each day.

One advantage is that it is easily scalable. If you go to 24 teams you just start on Monday:
  • Monday #17-24 play
  • Tuesday #13-16 play Monday's winners
  • Wednesday #9-12 play Tuesday's winners
  • Thursday #5-8 play Wednesday's winners
  • Friday-Sunday #1-4 join Thursday's winners in an eight-team three-day tournament
The disadvantages, as I see it, are:
  • It is insanely impossible for the lower seeded teams because in order to win you'd have to win seven games in seven days.
  • About half of your games are at times when most people are at work and can't watch.

Alternative 24-team CBB Tournament method:
I think I'd prefer reseeding but that is inordinately complicated to lay out so for this purpose I'll just assume that we don't.  If reseeding was chosen it doesn't change the game times, it only changes which teams play when there are upsets.

Saturday, eight days before Selection Sunday - two sessions, a two-game early session and a three-game late session.  These five games get us down to 19 teams:

  • 11am, #15 vs #14
  • 1:30pm, #16 vs #13
  • 5pm, #17 vs #12
  • 7:30pm, #18 vs #11
  • 10pm, #19 vs #10
Sunday, one week before Selection Sunday - two sessions, a two-game early session and a three-game late session.  These five games get us down to 14 teams:
  • 11am, #20 vs #9
  • 130pm, #21 vs #8
  • 5pm, #22 vs #7
  • 730pm, #23 vs #6
  • 10pm, #24 vs #5

Monday, six days before Selection Sunday - one session, three games.  These three games get us down to 11 teams:
  • 5pm, #14/15 vs #5/24
  • 730pm, #13/16 vs #6/23
  • 10pm, #12/17 vs #7/22
Tuesday, five days before Selection Sunday - one session, three games.  These three games get us down to 8 teams:
  • 5pm, #9/20 vs #6/23/13/16
  • 730pm, #10/19 vs #7/22/12/17
  • 10pm, #11/18 vs #8/21

Wednesday, four days before Selection Sunday - one session, two games.  These two games get us down to 6 teams:
  • 6pm, #1 vs #8/21/11/18
  • 830pm, #2 vs #7/22/12/17/10/19
Thursday, three days before Selection Sunday - one session, two games.  These two games get us down to 4 teams:
  • 6pm, #3 vs #6/23/13/16/9/20
  • 830pm, #4 vs #5/24/14/15
Friday off.
Saturday, one day before Selection Sunday - one session, two games.  These two games get us down to 2 teams:
  • 1pm, #1/8/21/11/18 vs #4/5/24/14/15
  • 330pm, #2/7/22/12/17/10/19 vs #3/6/23/13/16/9/20
Selection Sunday - one session, one game:
  • 330pm, Championship game.

I think they should have basketball divisions. PAC 4 + UNL, Iowa, Minnie, UW and IL.

How many schools do we have now? 18?

I think they should have basketball divisions. PAC 4 + UNL, Iowa, Minnie, UW and IL.

How many schools do we have now? 18?
Well:
Prior to the 1993/94 Academic year there were 10 dating back to sometime in the 50's (roughly E->W):
  • Ohio State
  • Michigan
  • Michigan State
  • Indiana
  • Purdue
  • Illinois
  • Northwestern
  • Iowa
  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota
Then we added Penn State to become the Big11Ten from 1993/4 through the addition of Nebraska which was quickly followed by Maryland and Rutgers to go to the existing 14 which will carry on through the current academic year of 2023/4:
  • Rutgers
  • Maryland
  • Penn State
  • Ohio State
  • Michigan
  • Michigan State
  • Indiana
  • Purdue
  • Illinois
  • Northwestern
  • Iowa
  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota
  • Nebraska
Then for the 2024/5 academic year we will be adding four western schools:  USC, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon.  That takes us to 18.

So we need an 18-team B1G Tournament format for the 2025 B1G BB Tournament.  I propose:
Monday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 5pm, #10 vs #15
  • 730pm, #11 vs #14
  • 10pm, #12 vs #13
Tuesday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 5pm, #7 vs #18
  • 730pm, #8 vs #17
  • 10pm, #9 vs #16
Wednesday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 5pm, #1 vs #12/13
  • 730pm, #2 vs #11/14
  • 10pm, #3 vs #10/15
Thursday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 5pm, #4 vs #9/16
  • 730pm, #5 vs #8/17
  • 10pm, #6 vs #7/18
Friday prior to Selection Sunday:
  • 6pm, Lowest remaining seed vs fourth-lowest remaining seed (if chalk this will be #6 vs #3)
  • 830pm, Second-lowest remaining seed vs third-lowest remaining seed (if chalk this will be #5 vs #4)
Saturday the day before Selection Sunday:
  • 1pm, Highest remaining seed vs lowest remaining seed (if chalk this will be #1 vs #4)
  • 330pm, Second-highest remaining seed vs second-lowest remaining seed (if chalk this will be #2 vs #3)
Selection Sunday:
  • 330pm, remaining teams

People in EST with office hours jobs don't need any time off to watch any of the games.

I honestly didn't even know where Niceville was. I thought it was on the peninsula not way up on the panhandle. Geez, that tOSU/Bama game is more-or-less a Bama home game since Niceville is 4.5 hours from Tuscaloosa and less than an hour from the Alabama state line.

Pretty much a Bama home game.

Might not be many people there with The Game and Iron Bowl going on the very next day. Not to mention Thanksgiving.
