First, is my dream scenario.

A five tiered 5-1-2 scenario.  Where you get the 5 P5 champs, the best Group of 5 champ, and the 2 best at larges, stating at Tier 5, and moving up, building to a great NYD, where that top tier also doubles as an unseeded playoff.

I think this accomplishes many things...

  • It brings NYD back as an elite college football day
  • It preserves the great bowl tie ins
  • It rewards better seasons, by knowing that the bowls get better as you build towards NYD
  • It puts weight on the Group of 5 Championship Games, as the only way for them to get into a bowl
  • I hate the "if you don't like all the extra bowls, just don't watch them" argument.  It has made the regular season less relevant, and bowls in general less relevant

Old-timey system:
Sugar: Georgia vs Ohio St
Orange: Kansas St vs Alabama
Rose: Michigan vs Utah
Cotton: TCU vs Tennessee
.
USC in the Holiday vs some LaVell Edwards BYU squad...
.
Ohio State wins the NC by beating the shit out of UGA, Utah upsetting UM, and TCU beating the Vols 9-7.

Sounds like someone is scared to play in a bowl that has been played for like 50 years in a city that has no correlation to it's name

Hell, if it meant all the other crap would fall by the wayside, just give me the 7 most historic bowls and incorporate them into a 16-team playoff.  Screw it.
.
Just use the rankings.  Win 4 games and win the NC.
Rose, Sugar, and Orange rotate being the NCG and the semis.  Fiesta, Cotton, Citrus, and Holiday? are the quarterfinals.  First round games are at higher-ranked team's home field.
.
Here's the fun part, though.
1st round winners CHOOSE where they want to play, in order of highest ranking.  Orlando, Dallas, San Diego, or Phoenix.
Top 4 are happy.  But lower 4 get to pick who they play.  So they're somewhat happy.
.
Same with the Semis.  Depending on which pair aren't the NCG, NOLA/Pasadena, Miami/NOLA, or Pasadena/Miami.
Same with lower-ranked pair.....they choose their opponent.
.
Since we're not ever going to go backward, just get nuts.  This would be MASSIVE and all the Toilet Bowls from El Paso or wherever can go to hell.
