Would you choose ...

A.  Your team finishes 8-5 with a bowl game win over nobody but you beat your hated rival, or

B.  Your team finishes 12-2 with losses to both HR and in CFP.
I think the answer to this depends largely on recent experience.

During the late Cooper era the Buckeyes had a lot of seasons similar to B above and I'd have picked A.

I think the reaching the CFP part changes it.  B seems obvious there.  I think if you change it to 2021 OSU's season, 11-2, with a Rose Bowl win, it gets tougher.  In 1998, I'd still choose B.  Hell, maybe even in 2008. Now, eh, it's all a wash outside the CFP anyway, so I'd take the bragging rights

It is interesting how much the CFP has changed the dynamic here.

Part of it is that going to the Rose Bowl is no longer synonymous with winning the league.

In 1998 (from @ELA 's example) an 11-2 Rose Bowl winning season for Ohio State meant, at a minimum, that the team tied for the league title and won the tiebreaker so even with a loss to the archrival Buckeye fans would still have league title bragging rights over them and everybody else.

In 2021 Ohio State went to the Rose Bowl but it was as Michigan's replacement because Michigan won the league and went to the CFP which is now the prime goal.

The actual B1G Champion going to the Rose Bowl has become a rarity, by season:
  • 2021: League Champion Michigan went to the CFP, Ohio State beat Pac Champion Utah in the Rose Bowl.
  • 2020: Roae Bowl was a CFP semi-final (played in Texas due to Covid), league Champion Ohio State went to the CFP.
  • 2019: League Champion Ohio State went to the CFP, Wisconsin lost to Pac Champion Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
  • 2018: League Champion Ohio State beat Pac Champion Washington in the Rose Bowl.
  • 2017: Rose Bowl was a CFP semi-final, league Champion Ohio State beat Pac Champion USC in the Cotton Bowl.
  • 2016: League Champion Penn State lost to Pac Champion USC in the Rose Bowl but this still "felt" like a letdown for PSU because Ohio State got the bigger prize of a CFP berth.
  • 2015: League Champion MSU went to the CFP, Iowa lost to Pac Champion Stanford in the Rose Bowl.
  • 2014: Rose Bowl was a CFP semi-final, league Champion Ohio State went to the CFP.
  • 2013: League Champion Michigan State beat Pac Champion Stanford in the Rose Bowl.
  • 2012: League Champion Wisconsin lost to Pac Champion Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

So in the last 10 seasons our Champion has played the Pac Champion in the Rose Bowl only four times (2-2). Our Champion also beat the Pac Champion twice in other postseason games.

The Rose Bowl was a CFP semi-final three times and our Champion missed an additional three Rose Bowls due to getting into the CFP.

The four of the last 10 years when our Champion did not play the Pac Champion in a postseason game were:
  • 2015: Their Champion destroyed ours in the Rose Bowl and our Champion got destroyed in the CFP. I think it is fair to say that their Champion likely would have beaten ours.
  • 2019: Their Champion beat our CG loser in a VERY close game and our Champion lost a VERY close CFP semi-final. I think it is fair to say that our Champion would have likely beaten theirs.
  • 2020: Our Champion won a CFP semi-final and lost the CFPCG. Their Champion lost their Bowl. I think it is fair to say that our Champion would have likely beaten theirs.
  • 2021: Their Champion lost the Rose Bowl to a non-Champion from our league. I think it is fair to say that our Champion would have likely beaten theirs.

Just remember that this system picked Indiana to go the CFP last year.  But I love it anyways.

Yeah, I'd be hugely mad if my team lost to Tenn in a simulation game.
