2021 Michigan State Offseason Thread
« on: March 23, 2021, 02:11:02 PM »
With the spring roster being announced, we finally have some sense of what's going on.  The roster has been a revolving door of additions and subtractions.

The only "new" pieces of news were that Tre Person and Laress Nelson appear to be gone.  They weren't really providing much, but the secondary is very thin, so bodies are bodies.

OG Jordan Reid, who was supposed to be a big recruit at the time, choosing MSU over UM and Florida, but was forced to play OT, and not all that great, and who opted out last year, is not listed.  He could have returned for a 6th year, but seems to have decided not to.

TE Matt Dotson, who was also a major recruit (maybe our highest rated in the 2017 class?) but had a couple major injuries, not being listed seems to confirm the medical retirement rumors from the offseason.

They did add a 4* 2020 LB from Minnesota in the portal today.

Lombardi transferred out.

Payton Thorne played pretty well late last year.  I would guess it's a battle between him and Temple grad transfer Anthony Russo.

Theo Day I'm guessing transfers if he doesn't win it, but he'd be the third guy out.  Noah Kim didn't play last year as a true freshman, and they added Hamp Fay, a 3* from Texas.

Thorne was impressive.  Cool as a cucumber. Russo did some damage- I forgot MSU picked him up.

A little OT, sorry, but for Sparty fans, is 2013 THE team?  Is there a consensus "best" or favorite during the modern era?  A darling, if you will.

2013 is certainly the favorite.  It was the first breakthrough team.  It won the Big Ten, beat Ohio State, ended the Rose Bowl drought, and then beat Stanford once they got there.  They were the first team in Big Ten history to go undefeated while winning every game by double digits, so they were more dominant than it maybe felt at the time.

I think 2014 was probably better though.  The defense was maybe a half step worse, but the offense was a full step better.  They just had the misfortune of playing (and losing to) the two teams that wound up playing for the national title.

MSU signee, 3* CB Steffan Johnson from Florida had his scholarship pulled, after using a sex tape he and an ex had made to extort her.

Made worse because she was 17 at the time.

The secondary, as expected, was the worst part of the team in the spring game.  3 starters and 6 from the two deep either graduated, transferred or went pro early, so the freshmen had a chance to make an impact.

In addition to finding out Elijah Collins was slowed by COVID last year, we learned today that Jacub Panasiuk did too.

Two more MSU transfer portal guys landed this week, both at MAC schools (one BGSU one Ball State) in the ongoing indictment of how bad this roster had become.

8 players have transferred out and landed at a MAC (6) or AAC (2) school, including our starting QB

Only 3 have legitimately landed at a P5 school, a WR to Kentucky and CB to WSU (both of which stung), and a backup safety somehow to Duke.  There was a LB to Kentucky, but he was booted from the team following an arrest, not a straight transfer; and then a walk on fullback took a scholarship from Illinois.
