Saturday results

OHIO STATE 38, MICHIGAN 26
Michigan fans had seen this before, as the Buckeyes sprinted out to a 28-7 2nd quarter lead, even with C.J. Stroud getting knocked out of the game.  Cade McNamera had a louse game, but Hassan Haskins really picked it up late in the quarter, as Michigan battled back to 31-26.  Kyle McCord put together the game winning drive, scoring the final touchdown with 4:12 to play, to put another dagger in the heart of Michigan fans

Georgia 23, Florida 20 (OT)
A lot of questioning of the head coaches will happen after this one, but at least Kirby Smart has a win to lean on.  The Gators squandered a 20-10 lead in the 4th quarter.  Down 20-17 with just under a minute to go, from the 2 yard line, Smart took the tying field goal.  Then, even though fans hate sitting on the ball, Dan Mullins’ decision to pass twice (both incomplete) from his own 25, and then run to force Georgia to burn their final timeout, didn’t pan out, particularly after a bad punt.  Stetson Bennett had a good day in terms of passing yards (284), even though he barely completed 50% of his attempts, but he found Brock Bowers at the Florida 35.  After running up to spike the ball with 9 seconds left, Kirby then tried to get closer, rather than rely on the 52 yard field goal.  While Bennett completed the pass down to the 18, in the middle of the field, the clock ran out.  Georgia had to settle for a field goal with their opening possession, but after Emory Jones converted a first down on the Gators’ first possession, he threw a game ending pick on his next pass.

Texas d. Texas Tech

LSU 26, Arkansas 20
K.J. Jefferson had a nightmare of a day, and the fact that this was a one possession game late, was only due to the Razorbacks being +4 in turnover differential, and LSU had three red zone possessions end in field goals (one of which was missed), and a missed PAT.

WISCONSIN d. MINNESOTA

PENN STATE 42, MICHIGAN STATE 14
In a driving rainstorm, Payton Thorne threw a pick on the first play of the game, and it was a harbinger of things to come.  Thorne threw two more picks, and wound up with just 111 passing yards on the day.  The turnovers just turned a loss into a blowout, because the Spartans had no answer for Sean Clifford and Noah Cain.

  • South Florida d. Central Florida
  • Army d. Notre Dame

NORTHWESTERN 24, ILLINOIS 7
Illinois has been one of the surprise stories of this alternate season.  But against their in state rivals, their offense was beyond inept.  They finished with 126 yards, and were down 24-0 before scoring their first points.  They’ve still set themselves up well for the elimination portion of this season

Louisville 24, Clemson 17
Clemson thought they had solved their offensive problems when they jumped out to a 10-0 lead after their first two possessions.  That was not the case, as the Cardinals battled back, tied it at 17 late in the third and took the lead with just around 13 minutes left.  The Tigers had 3 possessions to try and tie it.  To no avail.

  • Tulsa d. Tulane
  • Houston d. SMU
  • Navy d. Temple
  • Buffalo d. Bowling Green
  • Massachusetts d. Connecticut
  • North Carolina d. Duke
  • Miami(Ohio) d. Ohio
  • Kent State d. Akron
  • Texas State d. Arkansas State
  • IOWA d. NEBRASKA
  • Alabama d. Auburn
  • Baylor d. TCU
  • Virginia Tech d. Virginia
  • Western Michigan d. Central Michigan
  • Toledo d. Eastern Michigan
  • Colorado State d. Wyoming
  • PURDUE d. INDIANA

Kentucky 24, South Carolina 17
The Gamecocks scored a 4th quarter touchdown to make the game appear a little bit close, but the Wildcats outgained them 492-239, and never felt in danger, even if late in the game, they actually were.

  • Florida State d. Miami

Wednesday result
  • South Carolina 33, Coastal Carolina 30

The Chanticleers strategy of bend but don't break on defense to the extreme, seemed to work, as the Gamecocks scored 19 points in the first half, off one touchdown and 4 field goals, despite nearly 400 yards of offense, with 266 passing yards from Zeb Noland.  But South Carolina dominated TOP, and led 19-7 at halftime.  Coastal Carolina turned momentum in the second half, and picked off Noland for the first turnover of the game, with 7:52 to play, down 33-30.  The Chanticleers got into fringe field goal range, but the 51 yarder was not even close.  It looked like Shane Beamer's decision to punt on 4th and 2 from the Coastal 41 with 1:41 left would be questioned, after the punt went out of bounds at the 21, and Coastal Carolina got out to the 48 yard line in 3 plays.  The Chanticleers took a deep shot, which was intercepted, to end the game though.
