The FPI odds thus far, seem not slanted enough towards the favorites

that might not be a bad thing, early this year at least. i read/heard somewhere that more ap ranked teams have lost in the first 2 weeks than ever before. for whatever reason, whether the crazy season last year, covid hitting teams, nil changes, portal being in full effect, or all of the above, it seems the favorites according to the ap have been wrong. or at least not living up to their billing early on.

Friday scores

  • Louisville d. Boston College
  • ILLINOIS 33, WISCONSIN 29

Wisconsin was -3 in turnovers, thanks to 4 Graham Mertz interceptions, including a pick six shortly before half which gave the Illini their first lead, and a game sealing interception in the final 2 minutes with Wisconsin trying to drive for the winning touchdown.

NOON games
Miami 29, Virginia Tech 17
In a driving rainstorm Miami was able to score a pair of first quarter touchdowns before the field deteriorated to near unplayable conditions in the second half.  It was 20-10 Canes at the half, and that more or less held

PENN STATE 38, INDIANA 21
Penn State stunned the home Hoosier crowd in running out to a 31-0 halftime lead, with Sean Clifford accounting for all 4 touchdowns, 2 with his feet and 2 with his arm.  Granted one of those was of those went about 2 yards in the air and Noah Cain did the rest with his legs.  Cain finished with over 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving on the day.

MICHIGAN STATE 23, MICHIGAN 20
JIm Harbaugh trusted his offense and they rewarded him by picking up a 4th and 2, up 20-16, with about 4 and a half minutes left, rather than attempting a 44 yard field goal.  Maybe it was less his faith in his offense than his lack of faith in his kicker.  Because shortly after he did send out his field goal team on 4th and 7, and the 33 yard field goal missed wide left.  Payton Thorne responded by going 5-6 and marching the Spartans right down the field for a go ahead touchdown.  The big play was a broken coverage that allowed Jalen Nailor to catch a 33 yard pass.  He actually had to lay out for a slight overthrow, otherwise he would have scored on the play.  Michigan got the ball across midfield, but the 48 yard hail mary failed,
