P5 a perfect 0-5 in bowl games. Luckily, they don't have to face another G5 team until Friday.
I don't think that this proves what you want it to prove. Lets look a little closer:
Air Force 31, Louisville 28:Although AF jumped out to a 14-0 lead Louisville got it within a TD twice in the second quarter and again late in the third. Ie, it was a pretty competitive game.
Air Force came in as a 9-3 team whose only losses were by four to UtSt, by six to SDSU, and in OT to Army. Considering that SDSU and UtSt played each other in the MWCCG and that AF played both to competitive one-score games, this AF team was a near equal of the best that the MWC has to offer.
Louisville came in 6-6/4-4 with OOC losses to two SEC teams (Ole Miss and KY) and league losses to Wake, UVA, NCST, and Clemson. To be fair, the Wake, UVA, and Clemson losses were within one score but the Ole Miss, NCST, and KY losses were not.
Lesson: The very top of the MWC is about equal to a middling ACC team.
Houston 17, Auburn 13:Houston jumped out to a 10-0 lead then Auburn scored 13 unanswered points to take a 13-10 lead late in the third quarter. With just under eight minutes remaining the Cougars were trailing 13-10 and threw an interception that looked like it might ice the game for the Tigers but the Tigers subsequently went three-and-out and the Cougars were able to capitalize with a TD drive for the final score of 17-13. Ie, it was a pretty competitive game.
Houston came in as possibly the second best G5 team in the country. They went 8-0 in their AAC games and came into this game at 11-2/8-0 with the two losses coming in the one game in which they faced P5 opposition (TxTech) and the AACCG against Cincy.
Auburn came in 6-6/3-5 with an OOC loss to PSU and a sub .500 SEC record. Granted, they did push Bama to OT but they also lost to USCe, MsSt, aTm, UGA, and the aforementioned PSU.
Lesson: The top of the AAC is about equal to a middling SEC team.
Army 24, Mizzou 22:Mizzou led 10-0, 16-7, and 22-21 with the Black Knights kicking a FG as time expired to win by two. Ie, it was a competitive game.
Army came in 8-4 with losses in both of their previous forays against P5 opposition (UW, Wake) along with a loss to BallSt and another to the Midshipmen.
Mizzou came in 6-6/3-5.
Lesson: A pretty good independent is slightly better than a 3-5 SEC team.
Utah State 24, Oregon State 13:Although OrSU led 7-0 and 10-7 early and only trailed by four at the half, the Aggies put it away with a 10-0 third quarter. Ie, this wasn't all that competitive.
Utah State came in 10-3/6-2 and Champions of the MWC. In addition to their conference losses, they also lost to BYU OOC.
Oregon State came in 7-5/5-4 with an OOC loss to Purdue and four PAC losses.
Lesson: The best team in the MWC is a little better than a middling PAC team.
UCF 29, Florida 17:This was a competitive game for a little over 40 minutes but then UCF scored 13 unanswered after falling behind 17-16 to win by 12.
UCF came in 8-4/5-3 with a loss in the one P5 game they played prior to bowls (Louisville) and three league losses (Navy, Cincy, SMU).
Florida came in 6-6/2-6. This is a hard team to get a handle on. They started out looking pretty good. In mid October they were 4-2/2-2 with the two losses being a close loss at home to Bama and a close road loss to KY. Then they lost three in a row and four out of five interrupted only by a win over an FCS team to fall to 5-6/2-6 before beating their arch-rivals.
Lesson: One of the better teams in the AAC is a little better than a 2-6 SEC team.
