2021-22 Big Ten Hockey Thread
« on: August 22, 2021, 03:47:58 PM »
UM went 15-10 last year, and still had the #1, #3 and #5 picks in the NHl Draft.  I don't think any other college had a single 1st round pick.  All three announced yesterday they are returning to play for Michigan again this year.  They are joined by two recruits who were drafted #4 and #20.  So 5 of the top 20 picks in the NHL Draft are on Michigan's roster next year.

No clue how they went 15-10 with historic talent, but they'll have even more next year.

It's not like Alabama went 7-5.  The cream still roast in the top in every other sport.  And I'd argue even Alabama didn't have that kind of pro talent disparity over the field

The CCHA makes its triumphant return

I think that leaves Huntsville and the Alaska twins homeless.

There answer here I would guess is two-fold.

1. They got drafted this year, which is to say, they were too young to get drafted last year. One was 17 when the season started, the other two were within a month of turning 18. That's a weird thing with college hockey. Those talented kids get drafted on potential, and they often have growing pains, in part because a lot of their lower-drafted teammates get a few more years of juniors. (Wisconsin used to run into this a lot, when they got super talented kids who were skilled but undeveloped. They learned at UW, but it made for some middling teams at times)

2. Another lesson I learned in college from a friend more steeped in the sport: Talent and fancy skating is good, but sometimes you need someone who is gonna go into the corner and get the goddamn puck. And those top-5 picks, they ain't getting taken for that skill.

I don't follow hockey very closely, but I'm excited to see Penn State playing in the Hall of Fame Game in Nashville on Oct. 30.

Of course not.  Apparently, North Dakota always plays in it, against various opponents.  I think they sometimes make it a big road trip so the North Dakotans have an excuse to go somewhere nicer.

It just gives me a chance to see PSU play without having to travel.

The Hockey Hall of Fame is in Toronto. The US Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eveleth, MN. No idea why they would tie their fortunes to this game.

Yeah, you want to play a big time college hockey game in Nashville, that's fine.  Why tie it to the HOF?
