I bought a preseason mag (Athlon).  When did it start costing $12.00 ????  That's nuts.

Anyway.

I turn through it, looking at the conference pages, and found something interesting.

No, you were correct.
UNM--the Lobos--usually fields a better team than NMSU--the Aggies.

I don't get why they are even FBS.  What fun is there in being a fan of a bad Independent FBS team?  At least bad conference teams have the hope of winning a Sun Belt or CUSA title?  NMSU has nothing.

I assume there's some small level of money in it that makes the drop down less worth it. Or there's no attractive spot to land in FCS.

Fun fact, they've never lost a bowl game in four trips.

They are still competitive in their two annual rivalry games.

Last year they beat UTep by 9 and lost to New Mexico by 3.
