Nebraska's offseason attrition continued Friday as defensive back Tony Butler confirmed to The World-Herald he is entering the transfer portal.

Butler, who would have been a redshirt senior for the upcoming season, played in 27 games during his Husker career, mostly on special teams. The native of Lakewood, Ohio, finishes with three total tackles. He appeared in four games last season and traveled to every road game.

The defender arrived at Nebraska as a three-star prospect and top-100 cornerback in the 2016 class, according to the 247Sports composite. His departure follows similar announcements last week from offensive lineman John Raridon and linebacker Pernell Jefferson that they would not return.

NU now has 85 known scholarship players by the Journal Star's count. The program can add up to two more scholarship players as part of its 2020 class and could also put incoming freshman linebacker Isaac Gifford on scholarship when the fall semester begins, so there will be more attrition from the scholarship ranks before September rolls around.

Iowa State's quarterback room lost depth Saturday when redshirt sophomore Re-al Mitchell announced his intentions to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Mitchell, who signed with Iowa State in the 2018 recruiting class, spent two seasons with the Cyclones. After enrolling early, Mitchell redshirted in 2018 before seeing limited action as Iowa State's backup during the 2019 season. Mitchell was set to enter the 2020 season as the No. 2 quarterback behind returning starter Brock Purdy.

While Mitchell signed early in the 2018 recruiting cycle, Iowa State eventually added Purdy later in the cycle to fill out the quarterback room. Purdy emerged as a true freshman in 2018 and was regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in college football in 2019 as he passed for nearly 4,000 yards and broke virtually all of Iowa State's single-season passing records. Mitchell appeared in five games, completing 2 of 4 passes for 14 yards and a touchdown while rushing 11 times for 100 yards and one touchdown.

We got the 5* WR from Penn State.  He'll go nicely with the 5* RB from Miami.

Hell, do you guys think a HC at a P5 program would pull resources from HS kids to focus solely on potential transfers?  Sort of like Calipari at UK in hoops - the 1-year wonders that have had ups and downs in terms of success.
.
Sort of like Snyder at KSU going heavy on JC transfers...but with more talented and/or less problematic players.

It's a niche that could be exploited if done the right way

if it gets started and some transferring players have success and therefore the program has some success, it could gain traction and become a thing

Fred Hoiberg did it in basketball at Iowa State, and that was before the portal.  I imagine he will hit it even harder at Nebraska.

Football is probably a little tougher because you need a pipeline in the trenches.  If your basketball roster only goes 6-7 deep, and is maybe a little guard heavy, it's not ideal, but you can work around it, play small, etc.  If you have 6 OL on scholarship, you are in trouble.

all true, but the Hawkeyes are picking up an Olineman from transfer

wouldn't have to turn over the roster, but if you could add 3 or 4 starters per side

Jaylin Bradley's name is now appearing in the transfer portal.

The running back had one of the more accomplished careers in Nebraska high school football while at Bellevue West, but has been mostly behind the scenes during the past three seasons as a Husker.

Bradley played in one game last season, carrying it twice for eight yards in the win over Maryland, after redshirting in 2018. It appeared that he might take off in Lincoln after his true freshman season in 2017, where he showed flashes while playing in seven games, carrying it 24 times for 93 yards. He was also one of Nebraska's better kick return options that season.

Yeah, Coy Cronk from IU. Good pickup for Iowa.

We discussed him earlier because he's from West Lafayette and wanted to go to Purdue, but Hazell never offered him. IMHO there was some bad blood there. Some thought he might "return home" now that Hazell is gone and Brohm took over, but apparently one of his requirements was not playing against IU, his former team. Iowa doesn't have IU on the schedule this year...

...unless they both make the B1GCCG. :57:
