Some updates on the Penn State front:

Penn State hired a new defensive line coach - John Scott Jr.   JSJ was poached from USCe, and was highly recommended by defensive coordinator Brent Pry.  Penn State has had 3 amazing defensive line coaches in a row, so the bar is set very high.

As far as recruiting (because that's all there is to talk about during the quarantine):

Over the last week Penn State received 4 commitments, pushing them to #13 overall in the mythical recruiting rankings. Lots of OMG STARZZ that people probably don't care that much about.  However, there is something interesting happening here that may of note to the board.

Penn State has been taking Michigan recruits like crazy.  Normally, Penn State grabs 1-2 players per year out of the state of Michigan.  This year? Penn State already has 3!  A 4th recruit (Buddin) is a very strong lean, and Rocco Spindler is also a strong possibility.  Pulling this many players from the state is uncharted territory.

Penn State wide receiver Mac Hippenhammer is no longer on the roster.  He was a two sport athlete, and it appears he will be focusing exclusively on baseball now.  I can only assume he will now be using a baseball scholarship instead of a FB scholarship.
Hmm, going to Miami(Ohio).  I remember when MSU was recruiting him the concern was that he'd go somewhere to play baseball instead.  Staying at PSU, but focusing full time on baseball checks out, transferring to the MAC to play football?  Weird.

Apparently the full scholarships in baseball are very limited.

Hippenhammer was a guy that was always raved about in practice.  He even blew up at the PSU spring game last year.  However, he never had success when he got his opportunities for playing time.  So...many...drops...

Penn State released their spring depth chart yesterday. Only really interesting thing to note was that Micah Parsons (LB) was put on return duties.

I got a chance to really look over the depth chart today and I wanted to put a few notes down.

I will list the position and how I feel they will rank in the B1G.

UnitBBT's projected B1G Rank
Linebackers#1 - They will be the best in the B1G.  Returning an All-American is nice.
Offensive Line#1-#3 - This unit is very talented, very experienced, and has a lot of depth.  Could be the best in the B1G.  Two returning starters were honorable mention All-B1G last year.  The other 3 returning offensive lineman are all very talented as well.  This kind of talent at the offensive line position hasn't been seen in many years.
Tight Ends#1 - If possible, this unit may be even more talented than the linebackers.  Returning an All-American is nice.
Running Back#1-#3 - Penn State has more talent and depth at the running back than any other team in the B1G.  However, PSU really needs a back to step up and become an All-Big 10 performer.  Journey Brown seemed to be that guy towards the end of the season, including rushing for over 200 yards in the Cotton Bowl.  Noah Cain also flashed at times, but his season was cut short due to injury.  There are two additional all-world recruits that will be getting carries next year, too.

5 star tailback Ricky Slade put his name in the transfer portal and is no longer on the roster.  Ricky Slade was the only back that showed the ability to reliably get open and catch the ball, so that will be something the young guys need to work on.
Defensive End#3-#5 - A lot of potential, and the return of an All-B1G second teamer is huge.  Jason Oweh is the biggest athletic freak on the team (even puts up crazier numbers than Micah Parsons), but has only flashed at times.  IMO, this unit under performed last year.  Hopefully the new DL coach can make the most out of this group.
Defensive Tackle#6-#8 Penn State essentially returns two starters in PJ Mustipher and Antonio Shelton.  PJ Mustipher gets a lot of love from Pro Football Focus, and Antonio Shelton has been consistently good, but not great.   The depth is OK, but not nearly as deep as the other units listed above.  PJ and Antonio have been average so far, but the potential is there for this unit to step up and be one of the better units in the B1G.  Penn State also likes to rotate a lot of guys, so someone needs to step into that role and perform well.  This is a big question mark.
Wide Receivers#9-#12 By far the most questionable unit on the team.  Jahan Dotson will be the best returning receiver, but there is literally no proven talent behind him.  This area was a weakness last season, and will probably be worse with the loss of KJ Hamler.
Kickoff / Kick return#1 Kickoff, #5-9 Kickoff returns - Jordan Stout returns, something like 85% of his kicks are touchbacks.  He's got the biggest leg in the B1G, and set the Penn State record with a 57 yard field goal last year.  Kickoff returns were average, at best, last year, and that was with KJ Hamler returning kicks.  There seems to be a bit of interest in having All American Linebacker Micah Parsons return kicks, but I foresee this unit remaining about on average with other B1G teams.
Field Goals#1-#3 - Penn State has the ability to kick nearly 60 yard field goals, but they also have a short range guy that is very accurate.  The kicking was so good last year it nearly won the Pitt game single-handily.
Punts / Punt Returns#5-#7 Punts, #5-9 Punt returns - Penn State lost their best punter to graduation, but Jordan Stout (see above) has stepped into the role.  I don't expect a huge dropoff, but I don't think Stout has the accuracy we came to expect from Gilliken.
Punt returns should take a big step back with the loss of KJ Hamler, and I expect them to be about average in the B1G.

Hah - I just realized I forgot about the QB situation.  I think Penn State will be around 4th or 5th in the B1G as far as QBs go.  The unit is deep, but Sean Clifford hasn't risen to the level of Trace McSorely yet.  Between the wide receivers and the QB, the passing game has the largest margin for improvement.

Ranking the teams by unit seems like a worthy board venture

The over/under for the units in which Ohio State being #1 is... 6?  Let me see if I'm close

Unquestionably #1:  QB, CB,
Probably #1:  DE, RB
I don't know enough to guess:  DT, K, KR, P, PR
Probably not #1:  WR, OL
Definitely not #1:  LB, TE

I like UW at or near #1 for LB and OL. They just keep cranking those guys out.

When did Wisconsin start having a good OL?  Was that when they went to this new wide open passing attack?

I just realized I didn't include Cornerbacks/Safeties on my list from above.  I'd say Penn State would rank #2-#5 in the B1G next year.  Tariq Castro-Fields will be one of the best CBs in league, as he was All Big 10 third team last season.  PSU is very deep at CB, and they are full of young talent and experience to fill in for the departed John Reid.  I would like to see them force more interceptions, as PSU was near the bottom of the B1G in this category.  They only forced 4 interceptions all year.  (2 by TCF and 2 by returning safety Jaquan Brisker).  I feel this unit will be one of the better units in the B1G.

The safety position should be in good hands with the return of Lamont Wade (2019 All-B1G honorable mention), Jaquan Brisker, and Jonathan Sutherland.  None of the safeties on the roster are going to knock your socks off, but they are a very good group overall.

Penn State hasn't had a linebacking group this talented since 2016.  (all 3 of the starting linebackers on that 2016 team ended up injured...ughh).

It has been weird not having the best linebackers in the league consistently.  Fans almost took that for granted for about 40 years.  It looks like Penn State is finally in the position to get there again.

And on that note:  Poz>Hawk

Seems like they've had a good OL forever.
